People felt that when the leaves fell from the trees, the spirit of the tree abandoned it. This made the people very sad as they felt that without the spirits the tree would no longer survive. It was after this, when people decided to decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments and make it look beautiful to attract the spirits once again. Christians decorated the Christmas tree with bright colours and lights so that it will show life within the tree. This is one of the reasons as to why Christians decorate the Christmas tree.

Another reason which is unknown to many is this - It is believed that the Christmas tree was decorated to attract people to Christmas fairs where merchants sold gifts, food and other items in the days leading up to the grand day of Christmas. This was one way of attracting people to unite on the beautiful day.
