Maria made history on Friday night at the Olympics as she became the first female to carry the flag for Russia in the opening ceremony.
During the Parade of Nations portion of the Olympics opening ceremony - athletes from each country participating in the Olympics walked in the Olympic Stadium, preceded by their flag.
Russia was 153rd in the parade.

Mariel Zagunis of the USA Olympic team carries her country's flag during the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium.
USA have sent a total 539 athletes to the Games.

Sir Chris Hoy of the Great Britain Olympic cycling team carries his country's flag as he leads Great Britain into the stadium during the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Sir Chris is Scotland's most successful Olympian having won three gold medal at Beijing 2008.

 The designer's recent work includes London's new red double-decker bus.
The torch lighting was accompanied by 'Caliban's Dream' a new musical work by Underworld.
