Many women are worried about reaching menopause, especially about weight gain associated with it. But it’s important to realize that menopause is your body’s mechanism to keep itself healthy when you age. We have some good tips about fighting with onther annoying symptoms of menopause.
Once menopause starts, the production of estrogen (female hormone, so to say) decreases. Many hormones of our body are mutually dependent; levels of insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormones, and leptin are also affected.
Insulin
Insulin regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. Consuming too much foods with high glycemic index (= foods that increase blood sugar) leads to insulin resistance which in turn leads to weight gain.
Cortisol
Cortisol is a stress hormone; increasing blood sugar and aiding metabolism are among its functions. Cortisol imbalance leads to increased fat storage.
Thyroid Hormones
These hormones are produced by thyroid gland and their main function is regulation of metabolism. If your thyroid hormones are off balance, your body starts storing more carbs and fats.
Leptin
Leptin is a hormone that regulates our appetite and fat storage. High blood sugar and fructose levels lead to the development of leptin resistance. It means your body won’t know if you’re already full which can lead to overeating.
Take these 3 simple steps if you don’t want to gain extra pounds once you reach menopause:
- remain physically active – lack of physical activity is bad not only for your weight; both light and intense exercises will be good for your health. You don’t have to put too much strain on yourself – extra 1–2 hours of physical activities a week is enough;
- your diet impacts your hormones, so it would be great to include into your meals more of the following: vegetables (especially green ones), organic foods, lean meats and other foods with good fats, nuts and seeds that are organic;
- you may need a lab test to make sure your hormone levels are normal and your cellular health is OK; consult your doctor if you think you need to get tested.
