Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. It’s found in large quantities in our bones and teeth, but also in the blood, neurons and other tissues of the nervous system. It’s estimated that 70% of our skeletal system is composed of this mineral. It plays a role in clotting the blood, regulating heart rhythm and allowing muscles to relax and contract.
Given that it fulfills such important roles for the human body, it’s important to be aware of the symptoms which could indicate a deficiency of this mineral in the body. In the long run, this deficiency can cause diseases such as osteoporosis.
Here we show you 9 warning signs of calcium deficiency in the body:
1. Muscle cramps
Sometimes these spasms occur as a result of an overworked muscle or lack of potassium, but when they’re recurring it can be a sign of a lack of calcium in our bones. If you feel cramps in the thighs, calves and arms, consider increasing your calcium intake.
2. Insomnia
Many sleep conditions are the result of a reduction in calcium levels. In other words, having trouble getting to sleep could be an indicator that your body needs more calcium.
3. Cracks in the teeth
Teeth possess a high calcium content, so a reduction in the consumption of this mineral will definitely affect dental health. One of these warning signs is the presence of cavities, yellowish and fragile teeth, and dental infections.
4. Dry skin and weak nails
Calcium plays a vital role in the restoration of the skin and nails. Hence, when there isn’t enough of this mineral, problems such as dry skin and weak nails can appear.
5. High blood pressure
Many minerals play a role in the regulation of our body’s blood pressure. Among them, we can highlight calcium as one of those responsible for maintaining blood pressure under control. Consuming enough calcium could mean preventing possible complications with hypertension.
6. Hair problems
Dryness, hair loss and fragile hair are sure signs that our body is suffering from a nutrient deficiency, one of which is calcium.
7. Joint and bone pain
Pain in the joints and bones tends to be a warning sign of chronic illnesses such as arthritis and arthrosis. These conditions can occur due to a fracture or the loss of bone density as a result of a calcium deficiency.
8. Menstrual pain
Although premenstrual syndrome is different for every woman, in some cases these spasms are linked to the amount of calcium in the body. It has been proven that adequate calcium levels in the blood can help to reduce pain, abdominal swelling, water retention, anxiety and depression.
9. Bone fractures
Lack of calcium can cause fractures of the bones and inflammation of the tendons. Even more importantly, calcium deficiency increases the risk of developing osteoporosis after the age of 50.
Doctors recommend adding foods to our diet which increase the level of calcium in our bones, muscles and blood. Among the recommended foods are: Dried fruits, dairy products, broccoli, cabbage, sprouts, fish, eggs and orange juice, among others.
If you suspect that you have a calcium deficiency, be sure to visit a doctor and discuss your symptoms with them. But before that, try to change your diet to include more nutrients and minerals such as calcium.
