According to the Spanish Aromatology Association, aromatology is a natural therapy based on:
"The use of essential oils, vegetable essences, hydrosols, vegetable oils, 100% natural CO2 extracts which haven’t undergone any prior manipulation or dilution (…) "
The term was coined last century, when French chemist, René Maurice Gatefossé, came up with the use of natural oils to treat certain afflictions
The term actually goes beyond merely what it alludes to — Aroma and the sense of smell. Aromatherapy is an extensive use of natural oils and essences which includes the sense of touch.
But why are aromas so important? Smells activate the psychological mechanism and have an effect on the memory. According to studies, smells can have an effect on our subconscious, stimulate emotions, instincts, memories and determine our behaviors and moods.
But, aromatherapy also includes another sense, touch. Basically, topical treatments with oils allow these essences to pass through our bloodstream, which is in charge of transporting the substance throughout the body and activating certain mechanisms.
