The birth of a baby is an amazing event, it’s something special in the life of every woman. New moms-to-be are waiting for that moment and looking forward to meeting their baby. But sometimes it happens so that a new mother feels not only excitement and happiness. These feelings can be replaced by anxiety, fear, and sadness – symptoms of baby blues or postpartum depression.
It’s not something that women might expect, but it’s not unusual and it’s ok to ask for help in these situations. Baby blues begins after delivery and might last for two weeks. However, postpartum depression is more severe and much longer
What can cause postpartum depression?
• history of depression in a family;
• stressful situations, like financial difficulties, health problems, unwanted pregnancy etc.;
• if a woman had a successful career before giving birth to a baby. After having a baby, this kind of women feel that their freedom and success are taken away. They feel less confident in a new role of a mom and struggle with that.
• changes in hormones; there is a big drop in hormone level, so it can cause all the mood swings, anxiety, and panic attacks.
If any of the symptoms above seem to disturb you, the best solution is to seek professional help. Only a doctor can diagnose postpartum depression and prescribe an effective treatment. It could be antidepressants that will be safe even when breastfeeding or seeing a psychologist or a therapist. In the case of baby blues, which usually fades away within two weeks, and during the postpartum depression as well it is recommended:
• to get enough rest;
• to avoid alcohol and recreational drugs;
• to accept help from a partner and a family;
• to take time for yourself;
• to connect with other new moms;
• to avoid isolation;
• to make healthy lifestyle choices.
These tips might help to enlighten mood and enjoy motherhood. And in any case, just remember, that it is normal to ask for help and talk with your family or doctor anytime you feel unsure and scared. Take care!
