When it comes to summer and enjoying the good weather and outdoor activities, mosquitoes seem to be an inevitable evil. And unfortunately, it means that we have to deal with unpleasant bug bites. In most cases, they are virtually harmless, but some of them may cause certain health problems. The mosquito bite typically doesn’t appear immediately upon the sting of this insect. It takes several hours to turn into a swollen and itchy bump.
It is important to remember that mosquitoes can transmit some dangerous diseases and in rare cases, a mosquito bite itself may result in severe allergic reaction. So if you have a mosquito bite and experience difficulty breathing or your throat starts swelling, rush to the nearest hospital immediately.
Mosquito bites usually come with an itch that may last several days after the attack. There are some creams and lotions like calamine that help to relieve itching, but you also can use some things that you already have around your home. Let’s find out more about natural remedies to soothe these itchy spots. And don’t forget the main rule: stop scratching them.
1. Honey
Honey is not only a delicious thing but a helpful remedy that can be used in many situations. Honey has well-known anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities. Use a small drop for your itchy bites, and it will minimize inflammation, so you won’t have to scratch them anymore. Please, be careful with this remedy because honey can be an allergen that causes severe irritation.
2. Tea bags
Many ladies use tea bags on their eyes to lessen puffiness, but they also work for mosquito bites. Cool a used tea bag and place it on your itchy bump. Wait to see the result!
3. Baking soda paste
Baking soda may be used for numerous purposes starting from cooking to cleaning job at your home, but it also may relieve itching after insect bites. Mix water and baking soda to make a thick paste and apply it directly to the bite. Wait for a few minutes and wash it out. This remedy provides a really welcome relief.
4. Ice
Something cold and ice can ease itching and reduce inflammation too. In addition, ice numbs the skin, so it has an immediate effect. You may use a bag with crushed ice or just what you find in your freezer to relieve swelling. Please, don’t put the ice directly on the affected area for more than several minutes because it can harm your skin. A towel between the bag with ice and your skin will allow you to leave it on a little longer.
5. Toothpaste
Well, it sounds strange, but a tube of regular toothpaste may also help. Just squeeze a small drop and cover the itchy spot. It will contribute to reducing swelling and pain. Most of the toothpastes contain menthol that creates cold sensations.
6. Tea tree oil
If you have tea tree oil, use it for your bites. This essential oil has amazing antiseptic properties and can reduce inflammation and relieve discomfort.
7. Aloe vera
Aloe vera is a very common house plant, and people have used it to heal small skin problems for hundreds of years. That’s why it may be a good cure for itchy mosquito bites. Just apply the gel from an aloe leaf to the affected area and let it dry. You may repeat it again if necessary.
