9 Facts About Autism Based On What Science Knows So Far

Autism is a condition in which a person’s social and communication skills are impaired. Children and adults with autism also have trouble empathizing with other people and are prone to repetitive behaviors. Older children and adults may also experience difficulties understanding figures of speech, humor, and sarcasm.
But some people who have autism are actually very high-functioning and can live a normal, independent life and achieve success in many areas.
In the most recent edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the conditions that were viewed as distinct disorders earlier (autism, Asperger’s syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and an unspecified form of pervasive developmental disorder) are now all listed under the category Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Even though autism awareness is increasing, there are still misconceptions aplenty about autism spectrum disorder. Below is the list of nine facts about the condition:
1. The latest statistical data shows that approximately 1 in 68 American children have ASD. It means that incidence of autism has increased, though it’s unclear whether it’s due to changes in diagnostic criteria and increased awareness or other factors.
2. Boys are more at risk of ASD than girls. About 4 in 5 cases of autism are diagnosed in boys.
3. Race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status have no effect on autism.
1. Symptoms of ASD range from mild to severe. Every child with autism has different needs, abilities, and problems.
2. Causes of ASD are still unclear, but it’s considered that genes (inherited or mutated), early brain development, and environmental factors are at play.
3. In most cases, children show distinctive symptoms of autism before they turn 2, meaning the diagnosis can be made early. Other children are diagnosed at earlier or older ages. Sometimes, people with autism (especially if the symptoms are mild) don’t receive the diagnosis until they reach adulthood.
4. The earlier autism is detected, the better it is for the child, because earlier intervention helps children with autism function better and be more independent later in life.
5. ASD is a lifelong disorder, but there is a number of treatments and therapies that can improve patients’ lives significantly.
Not all children with autism have learning disability or low intelligence. In fact, about 46% of children with autism have above average intelligence, according to CDC. And they can be exceptionally skilled in many areas, such as math, science, art, and music. And many famous people have proved this. Just look at them!
