If you snore, you probably want to know why it happens. Doctors explain that snoring occurs when the relaxed tissues in your throat start to vibrate while the air you breathe in comes through them. More than half of adult people in the United States suffer from snoring from time to time. Your age, weight and health condition may change the sound of your snoring.
What can make you snore? It can be everything that stops you from breathing through your nose. So, if you have a stuffy nose due to allergy, cold or flu, it can be a reason. Some medicines and nasal strips can help, but see your doctor if you have this problem for months at a time.
Sleeping on your back may also worsen the situation of snoring. If you are prone to snoring, sleeping on your side is the best option for you. You may also use several pillows while sleeping to avoid being flat on your back.
The shape of your nose may also result in snoring. There is a thin wall between your nostrils, but sometimes it doesn’t form correctly, and one side is bigger than the other. This condition creates difficulties in breathing and forces you to snore. The same thing can happen if your nose was hurt. Consult with your doctor; in this case, surgery may help.
The shape of your mouth can also be a problem and make you snore. Sometimes surgery may help, but only a professional doctor may give you a proper diagnosis.
Certain medications including sedatives, some antidepressants, and muscle relaxants may affect your tongue and muscles in your throat. So if you snore and take these meds, talk to your doctor – he or she may be able to change the treatment.
It can be sleep apnea, a serious condition that makes you stop breathing while sleeping. Doctors say that there is a connection between sleep apnea and heart diseases, so visit your doctor as soon as possible if you suspect that you might have sleep apnea.
Pregnancy may also go hand-in-hand with snoring. Mothers-to-be may begin to snore because their nasal passages can swell and result in harder breathing. It also may be a sign of high blood pressure, so tell your doctor about your snoring if you are pregnant.
What can we do to stop snoring? The first rule is to control your weight. You are more likely to snore if you have extra pounds, so losing some weight may help. Consult with your doctor to find the best option for you.
Don’t drink too much alcohol. Like certain meds alcohol drinks may relax your throat muscles and make you snore, so be careful with adult beverages.
