Do you make regular breast examination? If you do, then breast lump is what you probably search for in the first place. It’s part of the tissue that differs from the surrounding area. It’s tougher than the rest of the breast and it can be easily localized.
If you find one, there’s no need to panic. Lumps aren’t necessarily linked to cancer, but they should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.
Let us walk you through the breast evaluation quickly:
1. Normal tissue vs. lump
Woman’s breast has fat and mammary glands. The former is much softer, while the latter feel like there are ropes inside your breast. They might be a bit “lumpy” or swell during the period, but that goes away with time.
Lumps feel like bumps, swelling, bulge, or protuberance. You can easily tell them from normal tissues
2. What to report to your doctor:
>> new lump;
>> changes in the existing one (e.g. growth);
>> the lump doesn’t disappear after the period;
>> breast skin gets crusted, red, crusting, puckering or dimpling;
>> changes in nipples: discharge of liquid, flattening or inversion.
3. What to expect at clinical breast evaluation:
>> questions about your risk factors for various breast conditions, including cancer;
>> visual examination of breast (in 2 positions: standing and lying), nipples and skin;
>> palpation of breast and armpits
>> doctor might assign other procedures for lump examination.
If you notice something unusual with your body, see your doctor as soon as possible. Better safe than sorry!
