You spend approximately 1/3 of your life sleeping. Of course, you know that sleep reenergizes your body, but do you know how important healthy sleep actually is for you to look good? Michael Breus, PhD, author of “Beauty Sleep: Look Younger, Lose Weight, and Feel Great Through Better Sleep”, has some answers.
Let’s have a look at the benefits of healthy sleep for your appearance:
1. It makes you look younger
Science still hasn’t found the way to stop aging, but you can at least slow it down by getting enough sleep. Breus says: “The deepest stages of sleep are when your body produces the most growth hormone, which aids in cell and tissue repair.” Sleep enhances the production of collagen, the major structural protein found in skin.
2. Skin-care products work better at night
It’s best to apply creams or lotions before bedtime; your skin is better able to absorb them when you sleep.
3. Hydration is important
Proper hydration is vital for your skin. Breus says that body rehydrates itself during sleep. This process makes dark circles and bags under your eyes less conspicuous, and also helps with wrinkles.
4. Good sleep relieves skin conditions
Problems with your skin may have psychosomatic roots. Stress is said to aggravate skin conditions; sleeping well is a way to reduce stress.
5. Sleep heals your skin
There are some factors that can damage your skin during daytime, such as air pollution and ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Sleep is the time when your skin repairs itself.
Doctors offer these 4 tips to make the most of your sleep for better looks:
>>сhange your sleeping position
>>Sleep on your back, not on your side. The material you bed sheets are made from doesn’t matter; when your face is pressed against the bed, the pressure promotes deepening of wrinkles.
>>sleep with loose hair
>>apply moisturizing lotion to your feet and/or hands
Put on a pair of cotton socks so the product is absorbed better and doesn’t stain your bed sheets.
>>wash off your make-up
It may not always be visible, but your face collects dust and other pollutants during the day. To let the skin on your face breathe freely, don’t forget to wash it.
