We are washing our hair whenever we have time for it or just want it to be clean when we meet people. Sometimes hair gets dirty too quickly, no matter how thoroughly and often you wash it. And some women are afraid of damaging their hair if they use various shampoos too frequently.

But how often should we really do it? We have an expert with us today to answer these questions.

The main reason hair gets dirty is oil glands, also known as sebaceous glands. They secrete sebum to protect the hair and the skin, but sometimes there’s too much of it.

Now, there are several factors that can explain sebum excess.

Younger people have more sebum secreted, and so do men in general. It also depends on the season, as the glands are more active during the warm months. If you have some illness that requires application of antibiotics or hormonal drugs that can also affect the hair condition.

However, you can balance this necessity with your diet, as eating rich food, high-carbohydrate food or drinking alcohol also causes increased hair oiliness. And some people just have an inherited predisposition to greasy hair.

Whichever your case is, you can make sure your hair is always fresh by following these tips:

1. Pick the right shampoo and proper frequency for washing your hair. While men should do this about every day, women need to wash their hair once every 2–3 days or every day if necessary.

2. If you wash your hair often, don’t use the shampoo for greasy hair all the time. It can make the skin too dry and cause skin irritation. So add softer shampoos to your hair care toolkit.

3. Sebo-regulating shampoo can lower sebum secretion if you don’t have an opportunity to wash your hair often enough. Just look for the relevant marking on the bottle.

4. If your hair got too greasy, use larger portions of shampoo than usual. It is also a good idea to lather your hair twice with leaving the foam for 1–2 minutes before rinsing. Dry hair only requires a small amount of shampoo. It is best to use the most delicate shampoo.

5. Even if you have dry hair which doesn’t get greasy for a long time, we would still recommend you to wash it once or twice a week simply to remove dirt and other stuff that gathers there over time. Use the most delicate shampoo for this purpose.

That’s the least you should know to keep your hair fresh and clean without the risk of damaging it by excessive care.
