Have you ever felt that weird, uncontrollable movement of your eyelid twitching? It’s almost imperceptible to others, but to you it’s very noticeable. Many people experience this little phenomenon, but they tend not to pay much attention to it or do anything about it. Here we explain what are the possible causes.
That hop we feel is due to tiny muscle spasms around the eyes. Spasms are small, involuntary movements and the causes of these could be the following: Tiredness, stress, excessive caffeine consumption, alcohol or tobacco abuse.
However, it can occasionally be a sign of a more serious condition. That’s why, if you notice these involuntary movements, it’s best you get everything in order and consult your ophthalmologist. Some of the illnesses which cause this type of spasm are irritation of the ocular membrane, anomaly in eyelid function or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In the case of the latter, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with a neurologist.
To avoid these illnesses, try to lead a more balanced life, without excesses, and take time to relax and unwind from your routine. We’ll also tell you the signs that will tell you if it’s a mere spasm or a symptom of a more serious condition.
If you have blurry vision, photo-sensitivity, eyelid inflammation, uncontrolled and repetitive spasms, unable to completely close the eyelid, spasms lasting longer than a week, sunken eyelids or convulsions and spasms throughout your whole face, don’t hesitate to see a neurologist immediately.
