The habit of sitting on the floor while eating is a well-known tradition among Indians. Since ancient times, Indians have always preferred to have their meals while sitting on the floor.Have you ever wondered why?

Here presents to you some surprising reasons behind sitting  on the floor while eating.

Basic Yoga

When Indians sit on the floor to eat, they generally sit crossed legged. This is a yoga pose known as the sukhasana. The sukhasana pose allows our mind to relax which is the first known step for meditation. This pose is also known to apply pressure to the lower spine, hence, believed to slow down our breathing, decrease muscular tension and blood pressure, ultimately relaxing our body for digestion.

Naturally improves the body posture

When we sit on the floor to eat, our body posture is automatically corrected. This happens because while eating, our shoulders are pushed back, spine is lengthened and our back is straightened which, in yoga, is believed to naturally correct a poor posture.

Improved digestion

Eating on the floor requires us to naturally bend forward to eat from the plate and go back to our natural position. This constant back and forth movement will help increase the secretion of the digestive juices which improves digestion.

Help in weight loss

When one sits in this position to eat, the brain is better equipped to focus on the food that is consumed. A research from Harvard University discovered that the nerve responsible for sending signals from the stomach to the brain is able to perform better and will give your stomach the signals of feeling full, thereby preventing overeating and binge eating.

Makes you more stronger and flexible

One benefits of eating on the floor is that the muscles in your lower back, pelvis and core muscles are stretched. Over time, the constant stretches and the bending of knees, ankles and hip joints will increase hip flexibility, which can reduce lower back pain and knee pain.
