Health benefits of Muranga Keerai

Drumstick leaves or Murangakeerai have been synonymous with Indian food for many generations. Most of us grew up with that fond memory of savoring on that simple yet delicious combination of murungakeerai poriyal, sambar and fried fish. Yet there’s more to drumstick leaves, otherwise known as moringa, benzolive tree and West Indian ben, than just being a popular side dish.

Virtually every part of the drumstick tree, from which the leaves are procured from, possesses health benefits: the immature seed pods commonly known as drumsticks; leaves, seeds, seed oil and roots. Even the western world has discovered and acknowledged the positive effects of the drumstick trees.

According to Agroforestry.net, (a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational resources on agriculture based in Hawaii, USA) plans to cultivate the drumstick tree and exporting them to America is currently underway.

It is not too difficult to reap the benefits offered by the drumstick leaves. Take for example, one simple recipe that helps to balance all the three doshas (Tridosha), relieves internal body heat, giddiness and relieves constipation. Here’s what you need:

2 bunches of drumstick leave,
Some mung dhal,
1 teaspoon of of mustard
1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
a pinch of asafetida
2 teaspoons of ghee
Some rock salt for taste

Once you have all the ingredients in place, firstly separate the leaves and chop them after washing them. Once that is done, cook the mung dhal in water and once it is fully cooked, add the chopped leaves and cook for a few more minutes till the leaves become tender. As soon as that happens, season it with asafetida, mustard and cumin seeds that have been fried in ghee. And that is all there is to it. A homemade remedy that is absolutely easy and inexpensive.
