5 Simple Ways To Preserve Silk Sarees

Silk is one of the most expensive and sought after fabrics, so you want it to last for a long time. But for that you need to undertake a regular maintenance procedure. You can't just store a silk saree or suit just anywhere.

You should not store your silk garments with other fabrics. Also, cleaning and storing silk properly increases the longevity of the clothes.

1. Always dry clean silk sarees: Silk should never be washed at home as it will lose its charm. Always send silk for dry cleaning before keeping it in a cupboard.

2. Changing fold from time-to-time: You have to take the pain to storing your garments made of silk with utmost care. If you want to maintain all your silk sarees in proper condition, change the folds of the sarees from time-to-time; do not keep heavily ironed sarees hanging in the cupboard.

3. Never dry silk under direct sunlight: It is important to remove all moisture for silk before storing it. But that doesn't mean the fabric should be dried under direct sunlight, else it will lose its colour and shine over time.

4. Wrap silk in cotton clothes: Always wrap sarees in a cotton cloth to increase its longevity. Keep every saree separately in separate covers. Never hang silk sarees or clothes on metal hangers. Always iron them on medium heat and do not spray water while ironing as it might leave impressions on silk.

5. Use neem leaves or naphthalene balls for protection: Always store silk sarees in a cool and dark place to avoid discoloration. Use neem leaves or naphthalene balls to keep the bugs away. Dry all silk clothes in natural air after you wear them to avoid them from foul odor.
