Top 10 Most Famous Beach Towns in Central America


1. Cancun, Mexico   



Cancun is situated in Southern Mexico, about 1,700 km from Mexico City. Originally the island was called Nizuc by its Mayan inhabitants. The name Cancun was first mentioned in the 18th century. Not long ago Cancun was just a small fishing island with natural, virgin shores, beaches, and wild forest. Close to the island is situated the worlds second longest coral reef. In 1974 it became a city of international tourism development, certified by UNWTO. Today, it is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in Mexico, together with Acapulco. Cancun offers amazing accommodation - beautiful resorts with spas, nice restaurants, water activities, adventures, beautiful beaches. Visiting Cancun can turn out to be one of the most amazing experiences in a lifetime. There is plenty to see and do. Some of the most popular activities are the jet-ski jungle tours, diving and swimming. For those who are interested in history and archaeology, there are some remains of the Mayan civilization.

2. Bocas del Toro, Panama   



Bocas Town is located in the Panama Caribbean region. It is a town in the Panamanian province in the district of Bocas del Toro, only 280 km (175 miles) west of Panama City.  The town has a total population of 12,996 residents, most of which are Afro-Caribbeans, the rest are Europeans and Guaymi Indians. There are some hotels and rental places, nice little restaurants and small shops that sell pretty much everything you will need during your vacation. Bocas is not famous with its nightlife, modern bars, chic spas and exquisite futuristic accommodation. However, there you can find the most heavenly beautiful, virgin beaches in the world.  On one side of the road you will see the beach, on the other is the wild rain-forest that literally calls for an adventure. This natural beauty cannot be described with a few words; its something you have to see with your own eyes.

3. San Pedro, Belize   



San Pedro is located in the Belize District, and is the only town on Ambergris Caye Island. It is situated on the southern part of the island. San Pedro is a small town with approximate population of 12,400 residents but is also the most popular destination in the western Caribbean. There are two languages that are mainly spoken - English and Spanish. The primary economic branch of San Pedro is tourism. Theres a variety of accommodation - lots of nice hotels and residential places that can fit every budget.  The restaurants offer traditional dishes, primarily seafood and also well-known dishes from the European cuisine. The tourists can find plenty of different exciting activities. The area is enriched with beautiful virgin beaches, crystal-clear waters, historic places and amazing nightlife. However San Pedro is visited primarily by scuba divers for the amazing diving areas like Lighthouse Reef, Shark Ray Alley, The Great Blue hole and others. San Pedro is also known as the diving capital of Belize.

4. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica   



Santa Teresa is a small town with beautiful, wild nature and gorgeous barefoot-perfect beaches. It is situated about 93 miles (150 km) west of San Jose - The capital of Costa Rica. Not long ago Santa Teresa was a small fishing village but its sandy beaches, amazing views, and exquisite traditional cuisine turned it into a popular tourist destination. The world-class waves attract thousands of surfers from all over the world every year. The town offers great accommodation that can fit every budget. There are numerous hotels, and rentals to choose from. The restaurants offer delicious food, music, and beautiful, natural scenery. 5. Acapulco, Mexico   



Acapulco is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It is famous with its amazing beaches, the beautiful Acapulco Bay, the exquisite cuisine, and the exciting nightlife. Acapulco is situated 190 miles (300 km) southwest from Mexico City and is a major port on the Pacific coast of Mexico. It is one of the oldest tourist destinations in Mexico. Acapulco is famous for the fact that many Hollywood stars and famous millionaires spend their vacations there. It has a reputation of a party town, even though there are many opportunities for quiet, peaceful enjoyment. The nightlife and entertainment are definitely the most tempting attractions of Acapulco. 6. Livingston, Guatemala   



Livingston is a town in eastern Guatemala named after Edward Livingston, who wrote the Livingston codes. His codes were the foundation of the laws in the government of United Provinces of Central America in 19th century. The unique mix of different cultures, brought by the people who live there today, makes the town one of the top tourist destinations in Central America. In Livingston you can find Afro-Caribbean, Maya, Garifuna, and Latino people, living together in this wonderful cultural mixture. The town of Livingston is Guatemalas main port on the Caribbean Sea. 7. Placencia, Belize   



Situated in Stann Creek District of Belize, Placencia is the most southern town on the largest peninsula of the Gulf of Mexico. Its population is estimated to less than 500 people.  Even though it is a very small village, Placencia is a very significant historic place and also a very popular tourist destination. Its history dates back to 17th century, when it was first settled by English Puritans. Today, there is a lot to be seen and done in Placencia. Its former name was Punta Placentia which means "Pleasant point". The name is very suitable for the town and the 3000 acres of Caribbean coastline that surrounds it. 8. Poneloya, Nicaragua   



Poneloya is situated on the Western coast of Nicaragua, about 12 miles away from the city of Leon. The name Poneloya is of indigenous origin and means "small seeds". The area was once inhabited by indigenous people. Poneloya is one of the most famous beach towns in Nicaragua. Because of its long beach line of dark and coral sands, warm weather, clear waters, palm trees and inspirational views, this small beach community is a preferred place by many tourists from all over the world. Throughout the year Poneloya is visited mostly by Nicaraguans, but during the Northern winter it is visited by many foreign tourists. There is a regular transportation service to Poneloya. A bus leaves every hour from "Sutiaba" market in Leon. Poneloya is most famous for its unique, beach houses, with big balconies facing the beach. The beautiful, enchanting sunsets are immortalized by famous authors, singers and artists.

9. San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua   



San Juan del Sur is situated in south-west Nicaragua. Because it is the most popular tourist destination of Nicaragua, the city is also known as the "Tourism city of Nicaragua". Its population is about 18,500 people. Most of the foreign visitors come from The United States, Canada, and Europe. There is plenty to do in San Juan del Sur. Some of the most popular activities are fishing, surfing, swimming and diving. Even though the beaches are the most preferable places for the tourists, San Juan also offers exciting nightlife, cozy restaurants, where one can enjoy some of the traditional Nicaraguan dishes. 10. Cahuita, Costa Rica



Cahuita is situated 43 km (27 miles) south of Puerto Limon in the Limon Province of Costa Rica. Cahuita is a very small beach town with a population of approximately 4,000 people - most of them of Jamaican background. One of the most famous beaches close to Cahuita is Negra beach (Playa Negra). Its named after its dark sands. East of the town is situated Cahuita National Park, where one could enjoy walking along the white-sand beaches, and some exciting activities such as swimming, scuba diving, and snorkelling. Cahuita is a wonderful beach town with beautiful views, full of entertainment, delicious traditional cuisine and adventurous opportunities.
