James Abram Garfield (November 19, 1831 – September 19, 1881) served as the 20th President of the United States, after completing nine successive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. His Presidency lasted only 200 days – from March 4, 1881 until his death on September 19, 1881, from an assassin's bullet, fired the previous July 2. His was the second shortest presidential tenure to that of William Henry Harrison, and he is the only incumbent of the U.S. House of Representatives to have been elected President.
