Kaththi grosses big in south

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Kaththi has taken a huge gargantuan opening in the southern box-office mainly Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states of Karnataka and Kerala.

Trade sources indicate Kaththi has grossed approximately Rs 50 Crore in these three states during the five-day Diwali weekend from October 22 to 26. The Telugu dubbed version is yet to release.

In Tamil Nadu as per trade sources the film has grossed a whopping Rs 36 Crores, which is the net figure as there is no tax in the state. And in Karnataka, the film is said to have grossed around Rs 7 Cr and in Kerala nearly Rs 6.5 Cr. In both these states there is an entertainment tax component.

Kaththi five day south Indian figures are amazing and proves the point that there is a huge fan base for top Tamil mass heroes. The first week gross is likely to touch around Rs 55 Cr, thanks to widespread release and buzz around the film.

Now it has kicked up a huge market for Kaththi’s Telugu rights. Initially it was said that the Telugu version will release on October 31, but now it has been pushed. Tagore Madhu who brought the Telugu dubbing rights is now thinking of remaking it with Pawan Kalyan as the hero. In fact, the Power Star is watching the film today and will take a call on whether to remake it in Telugu.

Vijay is a happy man

Ilayathalapathy Vijay held a meet and greet with the media at a star hotel in Chennai on Tuesday. After the stupendous success of Kaththi in India and abroad there was a reason to celebrate.

Remember, Vijay had not met the media for a long time and was keeping a low profile during the release of Kaththi. On Monday, Vijay attended a fans success meet in Coimbatore. Now, he took time to thank media for their support.

Vijay personally welcomed all the media members, shook hands with them, briefly spoke to them and took pictures with them. Social Media was flooded with those pictures. A few of Kaththi’s distributors in Tamil Nadu were also present.

Yet another case filed on Kaththi

On One hand Kaththi seems to be raking up rave reviews and minting enough money to show that Vijay and Murugadoss are here to stay, on the other hand the list of controversies too seem to rise. After sorting out all the problems with the producers, now a fresh defamation case has been filed on actor Vijay, Director AR Murugadoss and Lyca Productions on grounds of accusation that the movie has dialogues pertaining to 2G spectrum case which puts the nation and its politicians in a bad light.
Under Section500(defamation) this action is chargeable and P Ramasubramanian has filed this defamation case, which will be brought for hearing by November 11. The petitioner has further accused that such derogatory dialogues will put the country in a bad light for Foreign Direct Investments.

'Kaththi' inching towards Rs.100 crore mark

A.R. Murugadoss-directed Tamil actioner "Kaththi", which has raked in Rs.82 crore till Wednesday at the box-office worldwide, is now inching towards Rs.100 crore club. It is now the biggest hit in the language for the year.

The film released Oct 22.

"The film is unarguably the biggest Tamil blockbuster of the year. In its first week, it has collected a whopping Rs.82 crore at the ticket window. It should touch the Rs.100 crore mark by this weekend," trade analyst Trinath told IANS.

Rarely will you find a Tamil film minting over Rs.100 crore.

"It's a rare feat because Tamil films don't have pan India release, unlike Hindi films. Moreover, the tickets prices in Tamil Nadu have a cap. Keeping all this in mind, what 'Kaththi' has achieved is truly phenomenal," he said.

Other Tamil films that have collected over Rs.100 crore include Rajinikanth-starrer "Enthiran" and "Thuppakki", which was also directed by Murugadoss.

Starring Vijay and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead, the film addresses the plight of farmers, whose lands are being taken over by multinational companies.

If "Kaththia" manages to enter the Rs.100 crore club, it will be third time for Murugadoss in a row after "Thuppakki" and "Holiday".

Pawan Kalyan rejects ‘Kaththi’?

A few sources claimed that, Tagore, who bought the Telugu rights of ‘Kaththi’ is contemplating on remaking the movie with Pawan Kalyan in the lead instead of releasing the dubbed version. The latest development is, Pawan Kalyan took time from his ‘Gopala Gopala’ schedule to watch ‘Kaththi’ and said that the movie would not suit his ‘image’.

Initially, Tagore made all the arrangements to release the movie for this Friday, but eventually wanted to see whether he could get the approval from the Power Star to remake the movie. Since, the movie is not going to be remade in Telugu; the dubbed version is expected to hit the screens by next week.

Is 'Kaththi' guilty of hypocrisy?

Kaththi is a film that you really want to like. It has its heart in the right place and the issues it raises are valid and relevant. But at the end of it, one is left with several niggling questions. Some of them have to do with logic – who, for instance, is Ankita (Samantha)? Other than the fact that she has a grandfather in an old-age home, we know virtually nothing about her. Does she go to college? Does she work? Does nobody care that the woman is sitting inside a pipe for three days? Considering that she is the female lead in the story, it's baffling that so little thought has gone into shaping her character.

But let's set aside these quibbles for a minute and focus on the main story. Kaththi is about the insatiable greed of the corporate sector, MNCs in particular. In their lust for money, they think nothing of destroying anything that stands in their path of accumulating wealth. Agricultural lands are grabbed, natural resources are robbed, government infrastructure is unfairly used. The rich become richer while the poor become poorer and nobody cares about what's happening because the media is not interested in anything that isn't sensational or glamorous. The urban population does not have the time or the inclination to care about injustices taking place by the dozen in the hinterlands. None of this is exaggerated. Journalists like P.Sainath have painstakingly covered the frightening crisis in the agricultural sector and the heartbreaking indifference shown towards it by the government, media and the urban public alike, for decades.

And so, when a group of farmers stand together and decide to take their lives to draw people's attention to what's happening in their village, a chill goes down your spine because you know that this is entirely plausible. In moments like these, Kaththi makes you sit up and take notice. But for the large part, the film sadly suffers from a lack of self-introspection. The press conference that Kathiresan calls towards the end is one of the more powerful scenes in the film – it's a long rant against the haves who have trodden on the backs of the have-nots in the country. It's a well-written speech that asks some truly uncomfortable questions. But it's ironic that nearly three-fourths of the film unwittingly celebrates and promotes the very culture and products that we're later asked to distance ourselves from.

Vijay as Kathiresan plays the role of a cocky charmer, a get-up that he seems to compulsively employ in every film of his. Though he has a back-story that gives some clue to the audience as to why he should risk his life for a godforsaken village, one is never really convinced of the loftiness of his goals. This is because the script is hampered by songs and romance sequences that not only disrupt the narrative but also dilute its impact considerably.

The super-hit number Let's take a selfie pulla, for example, is a celebration of urban life with all its self-centeredness and self-obsession, the very characteristics that Kathiresan later says is criminal. The simplistic division of urban = evil and village = good is fine for a while but after a point, it becomes predictable and boring. Especially when it is the culture of the rich that the hero and the heroine are selling all the time except when preaching to the audience. The director seems to have missed the irony in this entirely. In the press conference, Kathiresan also rants about fairness creams which use up the country's resources while the poor suffer without the basic necessities. But what really creates the demand for fairness creams? Does it have nothing at all to do with the constant casting of super-fair women as heroines always? Something for Murugadoss to mull over when he picks his cast the next time.

Kaththi is by no means a bad film. But it could have been a way better film if only its makers had spent some time pondering over this old proverb: When you point your finger at someone, remember that you have four fingers pointed at you. Kaththi reminds me of the moral stories I read as a child. They would each have a wonderful moral in the end, highlighted in bold. But the stories themselves would be full of cruel stepmothers, evil hunchbacks, ugly villains and too-white princesses.

Did AR Murugadoss steal 'Kaththi story'? He faces plagarism charges!

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s AR Murgadoss directed  Kaththi has become a hit, but is in the eye of a storm. It is facing plagarism charges and three scenes including the famous coin scene is said to be a straight lift from foreign films. (In pic: The Kaththi team of Vijay, Anirudh and AR Murugadoss) A little known assistant director  Gopi has created a furore in an online interview where he has said how Kaththi’s story, credited to AR Murugadoss, was allegedly stolen from him!

Murugadoss has refused to be drawn into the controversy saying he has been advised to remain silent as the case is up for hearing soon. There has also been rumours that the Kaththi team is also trying for an out of court settlement. But the fact remains that Kaththi is double edged, by minting money at the box-office and at the same time tearing into the reputation of its maker.

And social media is full of clippings of films from which ARM has “stolen” ideas like – coin scene, plan scene and theme music, which worked wonders for Kaththi.  The industry is keeping a studious silence as many hit films in the past too had scenes lifted and indianised to suit local taste.

Meanwhile at a time when Kaththi is getting decent reviews, well known bureaucrat and social scientist  Alex Paul Menon IAS, has hit out against the film. Remember Alex is the young civil servant, who shot to fame after being abducted by Maoists when he was the collector of Sukma district in Chhattisgarh.

Alex Paul Menon in his blog said : “I have nothing against films and filmmakers, because they are merchants, but expecting social responsibility from them is like seeking medicine for cancer from quacks.”  Menon pick holes in the water conservation message portrayed in the film.

According to Menon, the deep borewells running into depths of thousands of feet that people dig, the lakes and ponds that we fill up for real estate purpose are responsible for the water scarcity and not just the corporates and cola companies as the film shows.

Alex Paul Menon concludes his blog with a scathing attack on AR Murgadoss film by saying : “Chest-thumping and punch dialogues are not going to change our lives. Keep an open mind, analyse the problem to find a solution and solve it. We are our own saviours, and that is the only way out. Instead of wasting time and money believing ‘Attaikkathi’ (cardboard knife), sharpen your brains, Tamils. People’s leaders are there among us, in our villages; don’t search for them on the screen.”

However all this has added more curiosity to the Kaththi controversy as the film continues to hold well in Tamil Nadu in its second week. Vijay has had a hit after a long time and Murgadoss has delivered another hit at the box-office. And that’s what matters the most in Kollywood.

Murugadoss tweets Kaththi’s entry to 100 Cr club

AR Murugadoss has Tweeted today afternoon that his Kaththi has entered the coveted Rs 100 Crore club. Murugadoss Tweeted : “ Kaththi  hits 100 in 12 days, still going strong.Total Rs 100.7cr, India 80.5 Overseas: 20.2 Thanks to all audience & media.”

As per sources close to ARM, Kaththi has collected Rs 65.1 Cr from Tamil Nadu in 12 days and remaining nearly 14.9 Cr from Karnataka, Kerala and rest of India. So far no official breakdown of the figure has been given.

Meanwhile trade sources in Tamil Nadu are doubting the figures. In Tamil Nadu there is a cap on ticket rates and such high figures can be obtained only by charging higher ticket rate. Anyway the Kaththi team believes that the film has collected Rs 100 Crore plus from theatricals alone and director himself has tweeted it.

‘Kaththi’ connection with ‘Naaigal Jakkirathai’

Telugu ‘Kaththi’ Different From Tamil

One of the greatest successes of recent times points straight to Ilayathalapathy’s Diwali treat, ‘Kaththi’. The film opened to such rave reviews and is consistently spoken high of that, film industries from other languages have their eyes keen on ‘Kaththi’ to take such a sure-shot success story to their audience. The first to come forward was Tollywood, and it was buzzed that Pawan Kalyan will play the lead in the film’s remake. However, since final verdict was impending from Pawan, it was finally decided that ‘Kaththi’ will be dubbed in Telugu. But, it still is different in Telugu from what the original movie is, in Tamil.

For Kollywood fans, ‘Kaththi’ runs to almost three hours, at 2 hours and 46 minutes. But this will be trimmed down by 20 minutes for Tolly audience. It is reported that dubbing work is in full swing for Telugu ‘Kaththi’ and the film will hit the silver screen in the last week of this month.

Kaththi plagiarism charges withdrawn!

Minjur Gopi who has filed a case against  AR Murugadoss for Kaththi’s story plagiarism has withdrawn the case. He informed the court about the withdrawal.

The court in turn dismissed the case and fined Gopi Rs. 1000 for unnecessarily disturbing the judicial functions of the court. AR Murugadoss feels vindicated with this move.

Murugadoss  says he was always confident that he would come triumph in this case and he never wanted to give in and set a bad precedent. However Gopi is tightlipped about the case withdrawal and he seems to be contemplating a different move.

Meanwhile Murugadoss is moving on to his next move in Hindi with Sonakshi Sinha. All the controversies surrounding Kaththi has made the film a super hit.

Salman in ‘Kaththi’ Remake?

‘Kaththi’ has turned out to be one of the biggest grossers of Tamil Cinema with already winding up more than 110crore. The movie is obviously a hot remake material and the recent picture posted by AR Murugadoss in his social media account stirred up rumors that the dashing director might be soon wielding the megaphone in Bollywood with Salman in the lead cast.

It is a known fact that the protagonist of Kaththi Neil revealed to media that either Salman or Aamir would be ideal to play Vijay’s role in Hindi and looks like Salman might be the pick. The Dabaang star who has a zeal for remakes is the front runner for portraying Vijay’s role even though these reports are quite early to confirm.

Murgadoss to do 'Kaththi' in Hindi with Salman Khan?

AR Murgadoss is a very happy man. His Vijay starrer Kaththi is celebrating  25 days today (Nov 17). The director is basking under its huge success and is now thinking of remaking it in Hindi.

At the moment Murgadoss is doing a Hindi film with Sonakshi Sinha which will be wrapped up in three months and will release in summer of 2015. Then he is supposed to start work on his next Tamil biggie.

However now Murgadoss is trying his best to do the Hindi remake of Kaththi with Salman Khan . A few days back ARM posted on his Twitter page a picture of him having a conversation with Salman Khan and Govinda.

This has lent credence to the story making rounds that ARM has got Salman’s dates and he will start the film late next year after the actor finishes his prior commitments.
