Saivam Movie Preview

Cast:    Nassar, Sara Arjun, Baasha, Twara Desai
Direction:    Vijay
Production:    A. L. Alagappan
Music:    G.V.Prakash

Rooster fight is a tradition in some parts of our state. There have been a number of films that touched upon this, while there was a National Award winner that was made on the very concept. But it is not only in fights and platter that we love roosters; the relationship goes far beyond – here, in an emotional bonding between a kid and her pet.

Soon after ‘Thalaivaa’, director Vijay declared that he will be rolling out a movie with the cute little sensation Sara, of ‘Deiva Thirumagal’, fame in the lead. There were rumours that Vikram will be a part of the crew and some suggested that he was replaced by Arya. But what is true is that the cast has Sara playing the role of prominence, while her pet rooster weaves the thread of story.

‘Saivam’ went on the floors last year, and is almost entirely shot in Karaikudi. When the crew’s first look poster was out in mid November last, it was accompanied by the news that most part of the crew is new talent to K-town. Nassar plays a crucial role in the film, taking every bit of the story to such earnest that he, with the help of Pattanam Rasheed, got a bald look, by shaving a portion of his hair. Apart from Nassar and Sara, the remaining cast is fairly new, but for a few character artistes. Interestingly, Nassar’s son Luthfudeen debuts with screen name Basha, in this movie.

The film has music by GV Prakash Kumar, and the album was released by Sony two months back. What took everybody’s curiosity to the album was the track ‘Azhagu’ released in its making version, edited as a teaser. The song is sung by Utthara Krishnan, Unni Krishnan’s daughter, in her all-innocent voice. This, along with the four other tracks, including an instrumental version of ‘Azhagu’, has fared well in the music market since its launch. The entire film wrapped up shooting in under forty days, for a light-hearted entertainer. As reported by the director, ‘Saivam’ is a movie on family traditions, and he believes that it will kindle some of the lost traditions, in the movie, which is hitting the screens this weekend.

Story is the hero of Saivam: Vijay

Director Vijay who has delivered some memorable films in the past is keeping his fingers crossed, as Saivam his ambitious film releases worldwide this Friday (June 27). There is a movement towards vegetarianism worldwide and this film delves into this subject.

Vijay has gone off the beaten path with Saivam, which is close to reality, a slice of life and it is something that brings back a feeling of belongingness and being rooted. Vijay who does not do anything which does not excite him says that he loves to work on different genres and Saivam his seventh film is completely different from all his previous ones.

According to Vijay, the story of Saivam was in his mind for the last two years and it relates to something that happened in his life which is very close to his heart.

He says: 'I am a vegetarian by choice and I come from a family that is hard core non vegetarian. Saivam is not a documentary on vegetarianism nor is it preachy. It is about family bonding, values, and today generation who does not have a clue about life in villages, love of grandparents etc'

Vijay says that the script demanded characters and not stars.  Actor Nasser plays a pivotal role and he is the backbone of Saivam.  Baby Sara is a revelation and her work is outstanding.  Vijay has a great team of cameraman Nirav Shah, music director GV Prakash and editor Antony. Concludes Vijay: 'When people ask me who is the hero of the film I don't really know. I guess the story is the hero'.

Sara Arjun is real star of 'Saivam': Director Vijay

Child artist Sara Arjun is the real star of upcoming Tamil family-drama "Saivam", says its director Vijay, who is completely in awe of the little girl's performance.

He has already worked with her in his film "Deiva Thirumagal".

"She has transformed herself so well since we worked the last time. She is the hero of 'Saivam'. She's the real star of the film. When you see the film, you'll realize that she carries the story on her shoulders. I'm sure she's going to floor the audience with her performance," Vijay told IANS.

"Saivam" is about the relationship between Sara and her pet fowl named Papa, and the events that unfold in her village following Papa's disappearance.

"It's a family drama at heart. The story will instill lost family ethics in the audience," said Vijay.

Also starring Nasser in the lead, "Saivam" introduces a host of newcomers such as Baasha, Twara Desai, Rahil and Ray Paul in important roles.

Sara, who has also worked in Hindi films "404" and "Ek Thi Daayan", has starred in several TV commercials.

Hollywood technicians impressed with 'Saivam'

Hollywood audio engineers Marti Humphrey and Chris Jacobson, who have rendered their services for the upcoming Tamil drama "Saivam", are wowed by the film's family harmony. They couldn't believe such family accord still exists in India.

Humphrey and Jacobson along with Indian-based sound designer Kunal Rajan worked on Kamal Haasan's "Vishwaroopam" previously.

"We have worked on action and fiction films in Hollywood but we still find it hard to believe that the family harmony which is all over 'Saivam' still exists in India. We would like to visit India and experience it more on a personal level," the two jointly said in a statement.

According to director Vijay of "Saivam", his film will instill long forgotten family traditions in the audience.

"'Saivam' is about family values. It will zoom through every individual's family roots and help people understand the real meaning of family portraits. It will instill lost family traditions into the audiences," Vijay said earlier.

"Saivam", which is also produced by Vijay, features child artist Sara Arjun and Nasser in the lead roles.

Working with dad intimidating, but boosted my confidence: Nasser's son (Interview)

Debutant actor Luthfudeen Baashaa, son of popular Tamil actor Nasser, says sharing screen space with his father in upcoming Tamil drama "Saivam", was intimidating in the beginning, but it boosted his confidence and gave him the opportunity to observe the actor in him from close quarters.

"At home you'll just see a father, but not a genius actor. However, on the sets, he was like a senior actor to me and I couldn't see my father in him. Scenes with him were at first intimidating but he made me feel confident," Luthfudeen told IANS.

"This was also the first time I observed him as an actor because all these years I had only seen him in films, never observed him much. This gave me an opportunity to learn as well," he added.

Baashaa plays a 17-year-old grandson to Nasser's character in "Saivam", directed by A.L. Vijay.

Although Nasser, a veteran actor, didn't give his son any "acting advice" for his cinematic debut, he wanted him to brush his acting skills.

"I had never told my father that I was selected for the film. It was a surprise for him and when he came to know he made me promise to enrol in an acting workshop. I underwent training under the mentorship of N.K. Sharma in Delhi," he said.

He says the training helped him "to cope with the pressure of being the son of a popular actor".

"I have to fight hard to live up to the expectations of the audience who will compare me with my father. The acting training helped me overcome that pressure," he added.

Keen to follow in his dad's footsteps, Baashaa wants to be as "professional" as his father.

"He is never late to shootings. He doesn't trouble the producers or directors and is very friendly with everybody. People like him for his professionalism and I will try to follow it in my career as well," he said.

Contrary to the trend that only sons of yesteryear heroes such as Sivakumar, Prabhu, Karthik and T. Rajendar have been successful in Tamil filmdom, Baasha believes "talent is finally the deciding factor".

"I don't think such a trend will affect my future in the industry. Everything finally boils down to talent and confidence. If as an actor I think I can survive in the industry, then I don't think anyone could stop me. The trend has been there, but I'm not worried about it," said Luthfudeen, who has a degree in design from Malaysia and a diploma in music production.

Baashaa admits acting runs in his genes, but he says he always "wanted to be a filmmaker".

In that case, why did he become an actor?

"The reason I agreed to act because I realised that even as a director I would have to handle actors. If I were an actor working under some director, it gives me an opportunity to learn the art of handling actors," he said.

"The directorial dream is still alive and I'm working towards it by making short films," said Baashaa, who agrees that he is "more passionate about direction than acting".

If career in films wouldn't have taken off, Baasha said, "I would've been a performing musician. I play the guitar and I'm part of a band".

"Saivam" is slated for a summer release. It also features child actor Sara Arjun along with a host of newcomers.

Saivam Movie Review

Director:Vijay
Cast:Sara, Nassar, Luthfudeen Basha
Music:GV Prakash Kumar
Producer:AL. Alagappan

'Saivam' written and directed by Vijay is a charming feel-good gem of a movie. It is light, easy and enjoyable family entertainer, with a message that pulls at your heart strings.

'Saivam' proves once again that a simple plot with interesting characters is all it takes to engage an audience. Vijay is at home and seems to be familiar with his milieu and understands his characters and their motivations intricately.

It is not plot-driven movie but centered on the emotional journey of its characters like the little Tamilselvi (Sara) and her love for the rooster Paapa. It’s cute to watch Paapa run away from home to school to be with Tamil!

What happens when the family decides to sacrifice Paapa to their local deity forms the rest of the film. It's unlikely you would have met a family of good-natured, optimistic and cheerful people like Kathiresan’s (Nasser), set in Karaikudi.

At a time when slapstick senseless comedies and thrillers are dished out week after week, 'Saivam' with a simple story of life in a village, a bitter-sweet tale of human frailties that delivers the goods. Vijay is aided by a terrific cast that doesn't miss a beat.

This film wouldn't be half the film without the abundant charm and screen presence of Sara who plays Tamil. It's hard to imagine another actor pull off the role of Kathiresan with such ease like Nasser. Luthfudeen Basha as Senthil makes an impressive debut while all newcomers in supporting roles are good.

GV Prakash Kumar’s score is refreshingly wholesome and among all the songs Azhage Aghaze…. is a gem. Nirav Shah’s camerawork is top-class, especially his interior shots, while Antony’s crisp editing (film is just 121 minutes) is perfect.

Give it a chance, it's simple, uncomplicated storytelling and curious concept will leave a smile on your face.It has qualities that you don't find in movies too often these days: a heart, charm and grace.
