Yaamirukka Bayamey Movie Review

Director: Deekay
Cast: Kreshna, Rupa Manjari, Oviya
Music: Prasad SN

Director Deekay, in his first Kollywood outing, strives hard to deliver a rib-tickler with enough chills and thrills of a horror comedy, a rare genre in Tamil. Remember in Hollywood, horror comedy is a very popular genre, which has a fan following.

Yaamirukka Bayamey is a horror comedy film that packs in everything that one expects from what the makers promised. The genre has not been explored so far in Tamil and there is something new about it. Some funny characters are caught in frightening situations in a haunted house and it is narrated in a comic way with enough chills.

A fictional hill resort is the milieu, where a con couple Kiran (Kreshna) along with his girlfriend (Rupa Manjari) inherits a spooky looking dilapidated mansion and they move in, and decide to run a hotel there. They meet the caretaker (Karunakaran) and his sister (Oviya) who joins them in running the desolate property. Weird looking guests who check-in die mysteriously and the four member gang bury them in the backyard, till they realize that there is something eerie about the place. Strange and inexplicable things begin to happen and soon it turns fatal. Very soon, a mysterious fifth character enters their life. Is it a supernatural element?

Though the film delivers few scares in the second half, and there aren't any genuinely frightening moments. The idea like all Hollywood horror comedies is to inject a lot of comedy as characters caught in spooky situations provide the laughs. The climax scene is worked out well.

But director Deekay brings in enough creepiness to keep you guessing and waiting. Not that it is devoid of a hook to hang its wafer-thin story line on. A little more effort and imagination might have made it two hours of harmless fun.

Kreshna is able to do comedy and at the same time feel frightened as he works up a sweat playing the heir to the haunted house and Roopa, as his charming girlfriend is adequate. Karunakaran is a scream, especially the scene where he talks in front of a mirror and Oviya looks glamorous while Mayilswamy is good fun. Sreekar Prasad’s tight editing enriches the film. However the back-story to the supernatural premise is so convoluted and predictable.

On the whole Yaamirukka Bayamey is something different within the commercial format and provides potent dose of laughs to release the tension built up by the scares.

'Yaamirukka Bayamey' is a comedy thriller: Kreshna

Yaamirukka Bayamey starring Kreshna, Rupa Manjari and Oviyaa advanced its release to today – May 9th as Kochadaiiyaan got postponed. In an exclusive interview, lead Actor Kreshna talks about the movie and much more.

What kind of movie is YB and how would describe you role.
YB is a horror comedy flick which has not been explored so far in Tamil for a while. Rather than talking about my role, it’s more about what happens to my character and how I come out of tight situations is narrated in a comic way in the movie.

How was it working with the first time director Deekay?
As you know, Deekay has worked with Dir KV Anand. When he narrated the script, I was very impressed. When he was at the interval block of the script narration itself, I accepted the movie. As a first time director, he has put his heart and soul in the movie and it’s for everyone to see.

Producer Elred Kumar’s RS Infotainment is a reputed banner in Kollywood. How was it working with them?
Elred Kumar is an intelligent and brave producer. His banner – RS Infotainment is like a race horse, once they start the movie, they will not stop for anything and they will complete the movie as soon as they can and will release it. They produce big budget movies as well as experiment with new genres. They also promote their movies well.

Tell us your co-stars Rupa Manjari, Oviyaa and Karunakaran.
Rupa is a good friend. She is an amazing Actor/Performer with zero ego. I really enjoyed working with her. Working with Oviyaa was fun. Actor Karunakaran is a nice guy and has done a good job.

What would you like to tell the audience about YB?
YB is a joy ride. I strongly recommend everyone to give it a shot. They won’t be disappointed. It’s a good summer fun thrill ride. Everyone will have a good time.

Tell us about 'Vaanavarayan Vallavaraayan' our next release?
Yes. Recently, VV’s audio was launched. It should release in June. I and Makapa Anand have good chemistry. It’s a rural romantic comedy with Monal Gajjar playing the female lead. After a long time, you will see two brothers having lot of fun with a rural background in Tamil cinema.

How about Vanhmam. You are acting with Vijay Sethupathy and Sunaina.
I’m currently in Nagercoil shooting for Vanhmam. Shot with Sunaina for a few days. Now shooting with Sethu. He has absolutely no ego. Very down to earth. It’s great to work with him. Vanhmam should be a milestone movie in my career.

You also started shooting for Yatchan. Isn’t.
Yes. Arya is someone I know for more than 5 years. A good friend. Yatchan is like a family movie with my brother Vishnuvardhan directing it and my sister-in-law Anu Vardhan doing the costumes.

Final question. When are you going to act with your favorite actor Thala Ajith?
If I get a chance to act with him, I will drop whatever I’m doing now and will act with him in a heart- beat. Hopefully it happens soon. He is a humble human being.

'Yaamirukku Bayamey' is a super hit!

RS Infotainment Elred Kumar’s Yaamirukka Bayamey directed by Deekay and starring Kreshna, Roopa Manjari and Karunakaran is doing very good business in Tamil Nadu.

The film which opened on May 9 had taken a lukewarm opening, but positive reviews and good word-of-mouth helped the film collections to pick up. By the end of first week the film had grossed around Rs 5.25 Crore from the 200 odd screens.

Yaamirukka Bayamey is the summer super hit!

RS Infotainment Elred Kumar`s Deekay directed horror comedy Yamirukku Bayamey is turning out to be the 2014 summer box-office hit.

The film made on a low budget is a winner all the way, as all sections of the trade – distributors, exhibitors, other right holders are happy with it.

The audiences simply loved the comedy and horror bits in the film. The film had Kreshna, Roopa Manjari, Oviya and Karunakaran in the lead and was packaged well by Deekay and marketed aggressively by Elred Kumar.

Yamirukku Bayamey was made on a shoe-string budget of Rs 3 Crore, add another Rs 2 Crore for print and publicity, total cost would work out to Rs 5 Crore approximately. Since there were no distributors to buy the film before release, Elred Kumar distributed it directly through various distributors who took it on commission basis.

The smart move by Elred in confirming its release on May 9 within hours after Kochadaiiyaan got postponed paid off handsomely. He was able to get theatres and almost get a solo release and word of mouth picked up each passing day. The comedy elements in the film made it work big time with family audiences.

Yaamirukku Bayamey as per trade sources has netted around Rs 13 Crore in three weeks from Tamil Nadu, with producer likely to get around Rs 6.5 Crore as theatrical share. The life time theatrical share of the film is likely to be around Rs 8 to 9 Crore.

The satellite television right of the film had gone for Rs 3 Crore to Zee Tamil, plus overseas and India domestic theatrical for Rs 75 lakhs. It has also become the hot in the remake circuit. The producer is likely to pick up another Rs 2 to 2.5 Crore from Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and other Indian language remake rights.

At the end of the day producer Elred Kumar may make 100 % profit from his modest investment. Yaamirukku Bayamey is definitely the big summer winner. Small is definitely profitable and beautiful.
