Jilla Movie Preview

Cast: Mohanlal, Vijay, Kajal Aggarwal, Mahat Raghavendra, Niveda Thomas
Direction:    R. T. Nesan
Production:    R. B. Choudary
Music:    D. Imman

Surprising tunes, blaring beats, stalwarts voices, Universal Star and Ilayathalapathy – what more do you need for a grand opening? ‘Jilla’ has been on the top of charts from the day the audio was launched, and now the time has come to be carried away by the visuals. With three teasers and a spectacular trailer gathering viewership like never before, Nesan’s debut is all set to thunder in cinemas from this Friday.

Mohanlal is back to Tamil after taking a hiatus here, since Ulaga Nayagan’s ‘Unnai Pol Oruvan’; Vijay on the other hand has been giving us smashing hits – one every year. Madurai seems to be the hotcake in today’s Kollywood scenario, and one of the pioneers who took to the temple town is ‘Jilla’ team. Happy-go-lucky carefree lads in and around Madurai are fondly referred to as ‘Jilla’, which explains the movie’s title. Clad in simple yet striking attire, Ilayathalapathy is portrayed as a modern hipster ‘Jilla’, Shakthi; Mohanlal on the other hand is cast as Shiva, the Godfather to Shakthi, in traditional South Indian outfits, and sports a salt-and-pepper look. Pretty lady Kajal Aggarwal pairs up with Vijay for the second time, after the 2012 blockbuster ‘Thupakki’.

From what we hear, ‘Jilla’ is sure to be an action entertainer. The leads Shiva and Shakthi unite to rein good over bad, and bring the latter down, working hand-in-hand. But it is not only action; Soori plays Vijay’s mate, and as we can see from the trailer, the film also has a good bout of comedy, in Vijay’s own unique style. Britain based actor Scarlet Wilson has performed with Vijay for a song in the film, and she is reported to have said that Vijay is one of the best dancers she has ever seen. Also in the cast are Niveda Thomas, Mahat, Brahmanandam, Thambi Ramaiah, Vidyullekha Raman, and many more for good variety of entertainment. So there, ‘Jilla’ has everything to qualify for a clean entertainer, aptly certified U by the Censor Board.

‘Jilla’ comes under the banner of Super Good Films, produced by RB Choudary; it is worth mentioning that Vijay’s last outing with the banner was a phenomenal hit, ‘Thirupachi’. Imman is noted for his standalone style of music with authentic and novel usage of instruments. The composer has chosen the pride of South India and used music styles from God’s own country, extensively. With Ganesh Rajavelu canning the crystal clear images, snipped to precision by Don Max, Nesan debuts as a director with a highly talented fleet. Having made 18 crore rupees already, in channel rights, and hitting a good 2000 screens across the globe, marches forward the powerful Shakthi-Shiva combination to win over the evil. Put your hands together for ‘Jilla’, gearing up for Pongal treat this week.

Jilla Music Review

Cast:    Vijay, Mohanlal, Kajal Aggarwal, Goundamani, Mahat Raghavendra, Niveda Thomas
Direction:    R. T. Nesan
Production:    R. B. Choudary
Music:    D. Imman

Everything about ‘Jilla’ has been creating headlines. From the opening song involving more than a thousand to the track that Vijay himself sang, expectations about this album has been high all along. Now with the album being received in hugely positive opinion, here’s a briefing of the musical magic that Imman has worked on the upcoming Vijay, Mohanlal, Kajal starrer.

1. Pattu Onnu
Lyricist : Yugabharathi
Singer : SP. Balasubramaniam, Shankar Mahadevan

‘Jilla’ opens on a highly appealing and extremely energetic song, that more than lives up to the promises about this track. Bringing electric guitar and traditional chenda beats together in an interesting mix, Imman has delivered in all grandeur, the opening song to which stalwarts will be tapping their feet. Shankar opens the song in all zeal, and SPB adds in later to make it a wholesome joyous listening experience. Apart from the predominant guitar and chendas, viola is also used to add to the magnum opus. The song gets very high on energy in the musical experience between the second and third stanzas. Mohanlal is Siva and Vijay’s screen name is Sakthi in ‘Jilla’; that explains part of the lyrics. Speaking of friendship and an optimistic and mutually encouraging relationship, ‘Pattu Onnu’ is a mass song in all respects.

2.Verasa Pogayile
Lyricist : Parvathy
Singer : D. Imman

The second one this album is a romantic track high on violins. With typical Imman touch, this romantic solo uses violins extensively. Starting and ending in whistles, the song is a beautiful melody with simple lyrics, apt for a young lad who’s just stumbled upon love. The song has strings of English influence, and it captures the mood of rapture in the right measure. Signature musical pieces by Imman are always outstanding and the one here in violins is no exception to the rule.

3.Jingunamani
Lyricist : Viveka
Singer : Ranjith, Sunidhi Chauhan

Roping in Sunidhi Chauhan for a folk-style song, this track is quite a thoroughly unpredictable surprise package. The track starts with air instruments and opens in Sunidhi’s rustic voice on Viveka’s raunchy lyrics. As Ranjith adds to the duet, the song proceeds further at a foot-tapping pace. Different varieties of guitars are used in this song, which add depth and volume to the track. The signature music after first and second stanzas are trademark of Imman, and uplift the overall listening experience. Beats all along the song are heavy and thumping, creating an energetic aura about the song.

4. Kandaangi Kandaangi
Lyricist : Vairamuthu
Singers : Vijay, Shreya Ghoshal

One of the most awaited songs of ‘Jilla’ is here. For a change, Vijay has crooned for a romantic melody in ‘Kandangi Kandangi’; it is the actor who opens the song after the female hum, and he has sung like a pro in this track. Shreya sings the coy yet taunting repartee to Vijay’s lines, making the duet a lovers’ anthem. Vairamuthu’s prowess cannot be measured in words, and it has been captured right in this intelligent composition. Given the lyricist’s complex usage of language, Shreya’s pronunciation deserves a special mention for making the song clean and hitch-free. This track uses violins in enchanting notes and strings.

5. Yeppa Maama Treatu
Lyricist :  Viveka
Singer : D. Imman, AV. Pooja, Snigdha Chandra

‘Jilla’ sure is a treat to all the fans, and this song is about it all. There is almost seldom a reason for treat, but parties are fun unlimited. ‘Yeppa Maama Treatu’ is a party song in hip-hop style. The track opens in Pooja’s voice and is a foot-tapping number, to which you can get on the dance floor and start dancing. The party gets a Tamil folk twist after the second stanza, when the pace slows down to the change in beats. It quickly transcends to faster beats, and the transitions are smooth without any glitch. Keys used for this song are a quirky addition to the party-happy song.

6. Jilla Theme
Lyricist :  Viveka
Singer : Santhosh Hariharan, Deepak, Anand, Shenbagaraj

The best way to describe this song is to call it the rise of the heroes. Racy and energetic, the song begins in disco genre. This track is highly appealing as it is carried in chorus, which carries a certain positivity about it. Tamil rap after the second stanza speaks of the fighting spirit and warrior-like brave attitude of the hero. The last 60 seconds of this 3-minute long high-energy song introduces chendas, and it gets better at every beat, making the song an extraordinary track full of josh climaxing in a powerful end.

The nail-biting wait has come to an end, and ‘Jilla’ has matched up to expectations to the fullest. Imman has composed some of the finest tunes, tailor-made for the youthful josh. But it is not restricted one age-group – the songs are for all, as everyone will enjoy this energy, without exception. With this, the expectations about the film has risen up multiple notches, as we gear up for a smashing Pongal this January.

Jilla Movie Review

Director: Neason
Cast: Mohanlal, Vijay, Kajal,Soori
Music: D Imman

Tamil cinema audiences love mass hero films, which may not have logic or reason but just have the essential masala items. Vijay’s Pongal release Jilla is a typical festival fiesta, a power packed, crackling thrill ride tailor-made for fans.

If you are looking out for some fun and time-pass entertainment then, Mohanlal and Vijay combo is sure to make your day. The bonding and camaraderie between the two, who play father and son is what the film revolves around.

Don’t expect any surprises in the plot or treatment, as the story is as old as the hills. Sivan (Mohanlal) is a don like guy in Madurai area. He brings up Sakthi (Vijay), his driver’s son as his own after he is killed by a police officer. Sakthi grows up with an aversion to Khaki and hates cops. To save his father’s crime syndicate, Sakthi is forced to join the police form, but soon tables are turned.

The film works largely due to Mohanlal – Vijay combo scenes. The jostle and push dance between the two in the energetic and massy number Sivanum Sakthiyum Serndha Maasu da.. is electrifying. The bonhomie and the comic timing is perfect and emotional action laced climax is apt.

Both the superstars have equal screen space. If Mohanlal hogged the show in the first half, it is an out and out Vijay show in the second half. Mohanlal is at ease playing the larger than life don, that only an actor of his proven calibre can make it believable. Be it his introduction scene or his flare-up, he tempers the recklessness of his character with restraint and pours plenty of heartfelt emotions. Vijay as usual is dashing and is terrific in the scene where he transforms from a reckless guy to a duty bound cop.

Kajal Aggarwal has nothing much to do other than be a part of the songs. Comparing her last release Thuppaki, here she lacks the oomph of an eye-candy and her make-up and costumes are nothing to write about. Poornima, Mahat, Niveda, Sampath and others just fit the bill. The major plus of the film is D Imman’s songs with Kandaangi Kandaangi.... and Paatu Onnu... being the pick of the lot.

On the downside, the film is too long and predictable with some of the songs acting as speed breakers. What is the need of that item song? Soori’s comedy falls flat.

The film works mainly due to Mohanlal and Vijay combo. Jilla is masala entertainment and a full course meal that leaves you with a smile on your face. A perfect outing with your family this festival season.

Vijay throws 'Jilla' success party

Ilayathalapathy Vijay threw an exclusive private party for the cast and crew of Jilla. Vijay always host his success party at home in his beachside bungalow on ECR.

Among the guests at the party were  Mohanlal, Mahat, Poornima and her husband Bhagyaraj. Vairamuthu too joined the celebrations as he had written the hit number Kandangi, Kandangi in the film.

The highlight was the specially made Jilla cake for the party and the icing said it all -  “Sivanum Sakthiyum  Serntha Mass Da!”
