Ponmalai Pozhudhu Movie Review

The premise of Ponmaalai Pozhudhu is promising but execution goes awry, and it drags big time. The film deals with teenage attitude towards love, friendship developing into obsessive relationship and parental opposition.
Last week Suseenthiran’s Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer dealt with a similar theme on love and infatuation but was better handled and had meatier screenplay. However Ponmaalai Pozhudhu director AC Durai, keeps wavering between a feel good musical love story and father-son emotional relationship, and ends up falling between two stools.
The story is wafer thin Arjun (Aadhav Kannadasan) a High School student falls in love with his classmate Divya (Gayathri). Initially Gayathri tries to shoo him off, but his obsessive love wins her over. They come from two different backgrounds while Arjun’s father (Kishore) is an understanding and loving dad, Gayathri’s father is uncouth, loud and always suspicious of her moves. This creates drama and tension and the lovers due to circumstances come out in the open.
The best scenes in the film are between Kishore and Anupama Kumar who comes as hero’s parents. Aadhav Kannadasan makes a fairly decent debut while Gayathri just does not fit the bill. The music of C Sathya is nothing much to write about and songs shot like music videos are there only to increase the length of the film.
On the whole, the love story has nothing new to offer and is predictable at every turn, with its message ending.
