Tamil Nadu celebrates Pongal

Pongal, the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, that coincides with "Makar Sankranti" in the rest of the country, was celebrated across the state yesterday. The traditional signs of the festival such as the clay-pot, rangoli, sugarcane and the boiling of rice with milk and jaggery marked the day as people enthusiastically joined the celebrations. Pongal falls on the first day of the "Thai" month of the Tamil calendar. On the second day, called "mattu pongal" cattle are decorated, worshipped and taken out. The last day is "kannum-pongal" when people visit families and go out in groups. The day preceding pongal is "bhogi" when people discard old things. Here are some images of the pongal festivities from Chennai.
