They are small, lively, and often overlooked — but sparrows are true unsung heroes of nature.

🔹 Sparrows are not migratory birds.
Despite their tiny size, they are not afraid of cold weather. Even in the harshest морозs, they sit on snow-covered branches like little ornaments on a Christmas tree.

🔹 Sparrow parents are caring — and incredibly useful.
They feed their chicks almost exclusively with insects and gladly eat them themselves. Their benefit is especially noticeable in spring: just one pair of sparrows can consume up to 3 kilograms of garden pests in a single month.

🔹 Sparrows are natural weather forecasters.
Have you ever seen them splashing in puddles? It’s not just playful behavior. When sparrows bathe in water, sunny weather is on the way. When they “bathe” in dust or sand, it often signals long periods of rain ahead.

🔹 A tragic lesson from history.
In the mid-20th century, China launched a campaign to eliminate sparrows in an effort to protect crops. The result was disastrous. With their natural predators gone, insects devastated grain fields, triggering the Great Chinese Famine. Between 16 and 45 million people died from starvation between 1959 and 1961 — the largest famine in human history.

Eventually, China had to import sparrows from neighboring countries and restore their population. Since then, sparrows have been treated with great care and respect.

💬 Small creatures can have enormous impact. Sometimes nature understands balance far better than humans do.
