When we repeatedly wake up because of a nightmare, it can make us nervous or stressed for the rest of the day. Nightmares can’t be controlled and we don’t know what night we’re going to have one. However, according to scientists, nightmares can be avoided by sleeping less than nine hours per day.

Sometimes nightmares happen when we just go through a traumatic event or after a big dose of stress. Because of all that, researchers at Oxford University decided to carry out research about the natural causes of nightmares.

The said research revealed that when a person is thinking a lot about the future or of the things which can go wrong, the frequency of nightmares increases dramatically.

When somebody goes to bed worried, a number of negative dreams increases. They reflect the person’s concerns during the previous few days as well as their subconscious fears.

They also found that sleeping more than nine hours per day increases the amount of REM phase sleep, the period during which nightmares commonly occur.

As opposed to what many believe, alcohol and exercise don’t have much influence on nightmares. For now, if we suffer from frequent nightmares we need to pay attention to the number of hours we spend sleeping. If it’s more than nine… we need to start using our alarm!
