1 In 3 People Around The World Have High Blood Pressure, And Many Of Them Don’t Even Know It. Make Sure You Aren’t One Of Them!
High blood pressure (also called arterial hypertension) is quite common – 1 in 3 adult people have the condition. About the only way to determine whether you have it is to just measure it with a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure meter).
This procedure is usually part of routine medical check-ups everywhere in the world. Normal blood pressure is considered to be at or below 120/80 mm/Hg (read as “120 over 80 millimeters of mercury”). If your blood pressure is at or above 140/90 mm/Hg, a diagnosis of hypertension is made.
In most cases, high blood pressure makes itself known when you are adult. But the condition may occur in children, too. Make sure your child’s blood pressure is measured regularly, especially if he or she has a family history of hypertension or is overweight.
Risk factors of high blood pressure include:
>> a family history of the condition;
>> being overweight;
>> excessive consumption of alcohol and salt;
>> lack of physical activity;
>> taking birth control pills;
>> certain medical conditions.
Blood pressure is sometimes left undiagnosed because it is asymptomatic. And that’s the reason why it’s known as a “silent killer.” Below is the list of signs and symptoms commonly associated with hypertension:
>> flushing;
>> dizziness;
>> blood spots in eyes.
If your blood pressure is 180/110 mm Hg or higher it has to be treated immediately. Symptoms of severe blood pressure are the following:
>> eyesight problems;
>> changes in mental state (such as confusion, anxiety, fatigue, inability to focus);
>> chest pain;
>> nose bleeds;
>> headache;
>> numbness;
>> reduced urination;
>> nausea and/or vomiting;
>> seizure;
>> restricted breathing;
>> weakness.
High blood pressure may lead to complications during pregnancy. Your doctor will be regularly checking your blood pressure to make sure it’s within normal range. Pregnancy itself sometimes leads to the condition known as pre-eclampsia or pregnancy-induced hypertension. Symptoms include fluid retention, vision problems, pain in upper abdomen and vomiting. It’s dangerous for a pregnant woman and her fetus, so it has to be treated.
Below is the list of complications that are common in people with high blood pressure. If you have arterial hypertension, you don’t necessarily experience all of them, but the condition can cause them if left untreated:
>> chronic kidney disease;
>> eye problems;
>> heart attack;
>> heart failure;
>> peripheral artery disease;
>> stroke;
>> aneurysm;
>> dementia.
If you have high blood pressure, talk to you doctor and ask him to recommend treatments to bring it down and make certain adjustments in your lifestyle, so you will avoid complications connected to the condition.
