Future moms should begin carrying a few packs of gum in their bags, especially if they have arranged a cesarean section.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has corroborated the results of a study published in the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. The study says that women who chew gum shortly after their cesarean section experience faster recovery of intestinal function than those who simply take traditional steps of walking and getting out of bed.

A team of researchers from Italy and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA, analyzed data from more than 3,000 women who gave birth via cesarean section. Those who chewed gum right after surgery experienced intestinal movement and recovered their appetite faster than women who didn’t do that. That’s not all, those women say that they didn’t suffer nausea or vomiting, common symptoms during the recovery process after consuming food.

“It’s a simple, inexpensive intervention which all health centers should consider, to help patients’ recoveries after a cesarean section,” said those in charge of the study. It gives new hope to women in the recovery process.
