Is There a Reason Why Olympians Bite Their Medals?

Do a quick Google search on Olympic winners and you'll see many photos of them with their teeth on the medals.

It seems to be an Olympic tradition for Olympians to bite their medals. How did this start?

One of the reasons behind it is really straightforward: it looks good on camera. Photographers love the pose. To them, it's a shot not short of being iconic and memorable.

Another reason could be that it's symbolic of the athletes asking "Is this the real life?" During the Gold Rush, miners bite on gold rock to check if it's real gold as real gold is soft and you can easily leave a dent on it. So biting on a medal is like checking if they really won the game.
