6. Heimaey, Iceland   



The city of Heimaey, Iceland was only 11 kilometers long at one time but in 1973 the Volcano on the island erupted, blowing ashes all over the town, soon the volcanic fissures gave and a steady flow of molten lava gushed from the earth heading on a direct path to the towns harbor. The Harbor is the main source of income for the townsfolk of Heimaey. As the lava ran towards the harbor the towns people got together filling buckets of water, rushing to the lava flow and pouring the saltwater on the lava making it harden up effectively forcing the lava to change course, preventing it from sealing the towns harbor. The town unfortunately was almost completely destroyed. Since then the town has been restored and now has a grand story to add to its already impressive history. Visitors can follow the trail of now hardened lava to its source and get up close with one of natures most powerful forces.
