64 years later, a new Brazil hosts the World Cup

Today's Brazil is a completely different country from the one that last hosted the World Cup in 1950 but some things have hardly changed even after 64 years.

Now as then, the fans' desperation to see games is matched only by the authorities' inability to build stadiums on time and under budget.

This year's tournament will be held across 12 cities in June and July and will cost at least 28 billion reais ($12.32 billion), almost a third of which will go on luxurious new or modernised stadiums.

Three of the 12 arenas – in Brasilia, Sao Paulo and the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro - will cost more than 1 billion reais each, and yet only two of the 12 were delivered on time.

The 1950 matches were played at just six grounds, including the Maracana, which was built in less than two years at a cost of 430 million reais in today's money, said Diego Salgado, co-author of the book, "1950: The Price of a World Cup."

More than 90 percent of the entire budget for the 1950 tournament went on that one stadium, Salgado said. Authorities delayed years before starting construction work and then went over budget.

"It's been 64 years but we're seeing a rerun of what happened back then," Salgado told Reuters.

"The costs rose because it was urgent. The first game to be played at the Maracana was played seven days before the first game of the World Cup."

Brazil had not yet won football's greatest trophy in 1950 but has since established itself as the dominant power, winning the World Cup a record five times. Fans the world over celebrated in 2007 when the South American giant won the right to host the 2014 tournament.

Brazil's politicians vowed it would be a golden opportunity for the developing nation to add much needed infrastructure but with days to go until the opening match, much of the promised works have not materialised.

In 1950, as now, Brazil saw the World Cup as a chance to show off to the world, said David Goldblatt, author of the book, "Futebol Nation: The Story of Brazil through Soccer."

The country was modernising quickly and seeking more of a global presence. And, then as now, there were elections taking place following the tournament with politicians seeing it as a chance to show off.

CHAOTIC PLANNING

While Brazil's traditionally chaotic planning has embarrassed even Cup backers like former striker Ronaldo, who has two winners' medals, it has not affected demand.

Around 3 million tickets have been sold for this year's tournament and close to 800,000 people are expected to come from abroad to watch matches.

They will see a spectacle that is unrecognisable to the one held here more than half a century ago.

Back then only two of the grounds were built specially for the tournament and they were considered progress, fitting monuments both to the game that had taken Brazil by storm and to the country's pretensions of grandeur.

The Maracana was finished so late that English referee Arthur Ellis reported plaster falling from the walls when a 21-gun salute went off and a Yugoslav player cut his head on an exposed steel beam, Goldblatt said.

"On the other hand I look at the Maracana and it was a much more generous vision than the vision today," he added. "As well as the football stadium they built other stuff. The athletics track and swimming pool were intended for public use and the school as well."

And although only 13 teams took part, compared to 32 today, interest was high. Football was already a religion in Brazil and the average attendance for the 22 games was 47,511, still more than at all but seven of the 19 World Cups.

Today the tournament is massive. There were more than 800 qualifying matches for 2014, compared to just 27 for the 1950 Cup.

FIFA has budgeted for $3.8 billion in revenues during the period 2011-14, with around 85-90 percent of that coming from the World Cup, according to official figures. Roughly 60 percent is from TV deals and the rest comes from sponsors, licensing and hospitality rights, FIFA said.

In 1950 there were no major sponsors of any kind and no live TV coverage because outside broadcasts had not been invented. The Jules Rimet trophy was placed in the window of a Rio jewelers for fans to see.

This year the Original FIFA World Cup™ Trophy – it has no name but it is trademarked - will spend 267 days traveling to 88 different countries so fans can catch a glimpse of it behind a glass screen.

Perhaps the biggest similarity between the two tournaments is the home nation's desire to win. In 1950, Brazil fell to Uruguay at the final hurdle and the defeat was so catastrophic that people are still talking about it.

They are hoping for a different ending this time.

"There's been a black cloud hanging over the Maracana ever since that game," Amarildo, a striker who played for Brazil at the 1962 World Cup and who remembers the 1950 defeat as a nine-year old boy, told Reuters.

"The only way it will be lifted is if we win the final this time."

FIFA World Cup: Every player to be tested for drugs

Laussane, Switzerland:  FIFA is on an ambitious mission to make sure that for the first time every player who takes part in the World Cup has a drug test and carries a 'biological passport'.

Football's governing body wants to impose the passport -- already used in cycling and athletics -- that will follow a player throughout his career, giving details of blood and urine tests.

Since March, a team of FIFA doctors and nurses have been carrying out random blood and urine tests at internationals and team training camps.

Lionel Messi's Argentina and France were visited last week at their camps to prepare for the tournament, according to media reports.

Brazilian star Neymar, Italian captain Gianluigi Buffon and Spain's Andres Iniesta were among those who gave samples at last year's Confederations Cup.

Chelsea, Barcelona, Santos and Monterrey stars were tested during international club competitions over the past 18 months.

Players can expect a tap on the shoulder right from the first matches of the World Cup which starts June 12.

"We can test anybody, anytime, anywhere, any amount of times," said Jiri Dvorak, FIFA's chief medical officer in a recent interview.

So far nothing alarming has turned up, according to Dvorak. "The hematological parameters are normal," he said.

FIFA is building up a biological passport on all players.

It has taken at least two test samples from most players while some have given up to four.

So far teams have made the doping investigators welcome. "They understand what we are doing and they consider that kind of examination as part of their professional life," said Dvorak.

The FIFA tests look for discrepancies in haemoglobins and red cells that could indicate EPO doping or other banned efforts to boost endurance. These kinds of tests are already used in cycling and athletics.

Football's governing body also checks hormone levels and for anabolic steroids in the urine.

The drug testing logistics in Brazil face difficulties, Dvorak acknowledged.

There is no international standard laboratory in Brazil. The World Anti-Doping Agency withdrew its accreditation for the only facility in Rio de Janeiro last year.

FIFA will be sending its samples to a laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland, which will add $250,000 (180,000 euros) to the doping clampdown costs.

And as blood samples must be analysed within 36 hours of being drawn, it will be a race against time to get samples from far-flung World Cup cities such as Manaus in the Amazon and Fortaleza.

"It is a challenge," acknowledged Dvorak.

But transport from stadiums has already been tested.

"There are a few games that are difficult. But the majority of the samples will arrive at the laboratory between 24 and 48 hours," said Dvorak. The Lausanne laboratory will work 24 hours a day during the World Cup, he added.

"Some of the matches are critical, the critical matches we will look at very carefully," the medical chief said.

Football has had relatively few declared cases of performance-enhancing doping.

Argentine star Diego Maradona was sent home from the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for the stimulant ephedrine.

Last year there were cases involving internationals from Jamaica, Peru and Tahiti. But FIFA believes the smaller football nations are less aware of the risks involved.

Cannabis and cocaine have made up the majority of drug failures in football in recent years, according to FIFA.com, the world body's website.

FIFA's biological passport could spread further than the World Cup though.

A scientific review of the FIFA campaign will be published at the end of the year. If it backs the drug testing, the world body may press the major leagues to start their own regimes.

We reacted strongly to turn the match around: Neymar

Sao Paulo: Star striker Neymar was happy with the way Brazil turned around the match after conceding an early goal, through Marcello's own goal, to beat Croatia 3-1 in the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup here Thursday.

The Barcelona star struck twice and Oscar scored the third goal in injury time to give Brazil a winning star against the resilient Croatians.

"I'm very, very happy to score two goals to help the team win the match. I'm happy that we react strongly to turn the match around. We have a strong squad. If we don't play connected we wouldn't win the match," said Neymar.

Brazil coach Luiz Scolari hailed Neymar, considered one of the best in the world, saying the youngster was under lot of pressure to score.

"Neymar has great quality, and he has a lot of pressure. Today he scored two goals. All we want is Neymar to be happy playing," said Scolari.

Scolari said Neymar doesn't need to be be reminded that he is the best in the world.

"He plays for the team and we also play for him. He doesn't need anyone to tell him he is the best in the world. He just need to continue playing for the team, for Brazil," he said.A

Reacting to Croatian coach Niko Kovac's claims that referee Yuichi Nishimura of being partial to his side, Scolari said the Japanese was spot in awarding the penalty in the 70th minute after Dejan Lovren challenged Fred in the penalty box. Neymar concerted from the spot giving Brazil a 2-1 lead.

"It's up to the referee to decide if it's a penalty, for me it's also a penalty. I watched maybe 10 times of the play and I think it's a penalty," said Scolari.

This was the third encounter between the two teams. The first was a friendly held in 2005 in Split that finished 1-1. The second took place in the opening round of the 2006 World Cup in Berlin, when Brazil secured a 1-0 victory.

This was also the fourth time that Brazil played a World Cup opener. In the previous curtain-raisers, Brazil notched two wins (4-0 over Mexico in 1950 and 2-1 against Scotland in 1998) and one draw (0-0 against former Yugoslavia in 1974).

Mumbai boy predicts first goal of World Cup 2014!

Mumbai: He is being called 'Nostradamus' and the 'Octopus for FIFA 2014' and for a good reason too, for Mumbai youngster, John Raphael, believe it or not, accurately predicted that Fifa World Cup 2014 would start off with an own goal.

John, with the Twitter handle @RaphaelJohn13, tweeted an hour before Brazil took on Croatia on Thursday that the first World Cup goal would be an own goal and even astonishingly named the Brazilian player Marcelo.

Thanks to his bizzarely accurate prediction, the 21-year-old economics graduate of St Xavier?s, Mumbai, became an overnight celebrity and his ?followers? increased by a thousand in less than 12 hours. He even made news in Belgium and trended heavily in Manchester.

'There is nothing to it,' he says. 'I have been following football for a long time now and Tweeting about it. But I guess there was nothing this big to have caught attention, especially since it was the first match of the World Cup,' said the Manchester United fan.

In fact, his first prediction was something different, 'Initially, I thought Mercelo will score for Brazil, but then I felt that it was going to be for Croatia instead and went online with it,' he says, insisting that he is 'no psychic'.

But he says that he doesn't plan to predict all the matches.

'I don't plan to predict for all the matches. I guess I am going to follow my gut feeling and tweet if I feel something strongly,? he says, adding, 'and I am not supporting any country in particular.'

Now, several other 'psychics' have taken to twitter using the same hashtag to promote their predictions.

Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0

Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0 in Group A with Oribe Peralta sweeping home a rebound for the game's only goal in the 61st minute.

El Tricolor had two first-half goals incorrectly disallowed for offside, with former Tottenham striker Giovani Dos Santos the unlucky player on both occasions.

But, Peralta's finish means they join hosts Brazil on three points after Group A's opening fixtures.

In the first half, Giovanni Dos Santos twice had goals disallowed as Mexico and Cameroon played through a scoreless first half in torrential rain.

Dos Santos appeared to have put Mexico ahead in the 11th minute, but was ruled offside. He headed in from a corner in the 29th but it was called back when referee Wilmer Roldan appeared to call a foul in front of Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Intandje.

The heat was supposed to be a factor in this balmy coastal city, but heavy rain swamped the Arenas das Dunas for four hours Friday morning and continued through the first half, creating a slick and slippery pitch.

Netherlands crush Spain 5-1

The Netherlands tore Spain apart in a dominant second half performance to thrash the defending World Cup champion 5-1 on Friday and gain a measure of revenge for its 2010 World Cup final loss to Vicente Del Bosque's team.

Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben both scored twice and defender Stefan de Vrij grabbed his first international goal in a humiliating defeat for a Spain team that has won its last three major tournaments.

Spain tumbled to its second consecutive loss in the opening match of a World Cup and its heaviest defeat in the games showcase tournament since capitulating 6-1 to Brazil in 1950.

'World Cup is over for me', says Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer will skip the World Cup in Brazil after the former West Germany captain and coach was banned by FIFA for 90 days for allegedly refusing to co-operate with an investigation into World Cup bidding. FIFA confirmed on Saturday that Beckenbauer is banned from attending any match at any level for the next 90 days, even in a private capacity. He will, however, be allowed to continue as a television pundit from a studio in Germany.

In an interview with Germany's Bild newspaper published on Saturday, Beckenbauer said he had decided to cancel his plans to attend the semi-finals and final after being banned on Friday.

FIFA said Beckenbauer had received repeated requests to provide information to an ethics committee investigation. Beckenbauer said he wanted the questions posed in German.

Beckenbauer, 68, has said he had nothing to hide from the committee and that he would answer questions in his native German language.

"The World Cup is cancelled for me," Beckenbauer said. "I'll drop the plans to travel to Brazil. I assume that I'm not welcome by FIFA any more."

Beckenbauer was on the FIFA executive committee which controversially awarded the 2022 World Cup hosting rights to Qatar.

His ban was imposed at the request of U.S. lawyer Michael Garcia, head of the investigatory chamber of FIFA's ethics committee, who is leading an investigation into alleged corruption over the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

Alan Sullivan, the deputy chairman of FIFA's ethics committee's adjudicatory panel, said in a statement on Saturday: "Franz Beckenbauer cannot participate in any football-related activity which includes amongst other things being invited to attend or attending on a private basis any football match in any capacity."

Beckenbauer is regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced the game and is revered in Germany, where he is honorary president of Bayern Munich, and abroad.

As a player, Beckenbauer redefined the role of libero and captained the West Germany side which won the 1974 World Cup.

He led West Germany to World Cup victory as a coach in 1990 and was head of the local organising committee when Germany hosted the tournament in 2006.

Beckenbauer is an honorary president of Bayern Munich and a special adviser to FIFA's football committee. He had planned to go on Bayern Munich's pre-season tour of the United States in August.
