Poovarasam Peepee Movie Review

Director: Halitha Shameem
Cast: Gaurav Kalai, Pravin Kishore and Vasanth
Cinematographer: Manoj Paramahamsa

Debutant director Halitha Shameem, Poovarasam Peepee is an enjoyable summer break. It is a coming-of-age film, set in a village milieu with some Enid Blyton’s type boys solving a murder mystery.

Halitha has done a neat job, backed by green unseen locations and awesome camerawork by Manoj Paramahamsa. The film is narrated from the children’s point of view, from their last day in school before vacation starts and ends with their first day after the holidays.

It is vacation time in an idyllic village somewhere in Tamil Nadu. Three friends Venu (Gaurav Kalai), Harish (Praveen Kishore) and Kapil Dev (Vasanth) laze around doing what kids do during summer holidays – discovering the environment, catching exotic beetles and selling them in the market .

On a rainy day while swimming they witness a brutal rape from a distant by a group of local influential goons. Next day they find the villagers made it out to be a suicide. The boys are not sure what happened but they decide to investigate which leads them to more danger and adventure.

Halitha has followed the basic Enid Blyton formula of Famous Five series. Of ‘course here there are only three boys who have the sort of adventures most kids dream about. And later when they go back to class while other boys talk of going to Munnar and other exotic places, our heroes can’t hide a grin as they know nobody will believe the walloping time they had.

The film is not in the same league as a Pasanga or a Goli Soda, because PPP has too many sub-plots which are not well etched. The film is also a bit too long (2 hrs 20 minutes), but Halitha has a neat message to convey. She could have avoided an unnecessary riot scene shown as a cartoon.

The kids have done a wonderful job and the director has handled them well. The highlight is definitely the locations where it was shot and Manoj’s eye catching camera work. Music of Aruldev mainly BGM is good. On the whole children will enjoy the film.

Poovarasam Pee Pee Music Review

Cast:  Gaurav Kaalai, Praveen Kishore, Vasanth
Director: Halitha Shameem
Production: Sujatha Senthil Nathan, Manoj Paramahamsa
Music Director: Arul Dev
Lyricis: Halitha Shameem

After the stupendous success of movies like, Pasanga and Goli Soda, here comes another movie with school kids as their lead. Barring, Manoj Paramhamsa (Cinematographer) almost everyone is new. Making the right noise on the first attempt is not easy, but, Arul Dev, who has got enough experience as an Independent musician has transformed all his knowledge to deliver a fistful album.

1. Ko Ko Ko

Singer(s): Aajedh, Gautham, Vignesh, Ishwarya, Swetha, Regan

A nifty folk tune reminds us the funny side of childhood. The song describes how eagerly the kids are waiting for their last exam to get over. Aajedh, the title winner of ‘Super Singer’ leads the pack with his signature energy levels to deliver a kuthu number with the help of violins & bass guitar sets up a festive summer mood.

2. Angry Birds

Singer(s): Ranjith, Aajedh, Gautham

An impressive orchestration leads the tune all the way. Though the mood of the tune reminds some portions of, Anjali, this is entirely different with mild rap in the interludes. With the verses like, ‘Enga car-u hot wheel… kelambittom da norukku’ justifies the adult world within kids. The complete transformation from rock beat drums to guitar at the last phase of the song is too good. This one could well become an anthem for kids some time provided the song gets good air time.

3. En Ulagam

Singer: Karthik

A soft pathos composed with piano gets accentuated by Karthik’s vocals for just 90 seconds.  The neat composition makes one wish the track could have been little longer.

4. Enakkondrum Vaanveli

Singer: Aajedh

Aajedh lights up this delightful carnatic/western fusion with his coruscating vocals. Though the track once again ends well within 2.5 mins, this one is the stand out composition from the composer. The sitar, Guitar and the string section during the interlude are such a magical blend.

5. Ganyiru Dhinangalin

Singer: Abhay Jodhpur

A beautiful guitar led melody often gets assistance from Violin in the background.  Abhay’s vocals flow with the tune without any stuttering. Not many composers would carry the tune throughout the song without deviating from the main theme. But, Arul Dev ensures a blissful journey.

6. Theme Music – Instrumental

Given the nature of the movie, the tune sounds heavily venturesome with electric guitars and bells. The main tune of Angry Birds takes the cake as the theme music here. A ringtone material for sure.
