Vallinam Movie Preview

Cast:    Nakul, Mridula
Direction:    Arivazagan
Production:    Oscar Ravichandran
Music:    Thaman S

In a country where everybody loves cricket, here is a treat of basketball. After almost a year since it’s censorship as a clean entertainer, it is finally here to hit the big screens with a bang. ‘Vallinam’ starring Nakul and debutante Mrudula is director Arivazhagan’s second, after his blockbuster debut, ‘Eeram’. Aascar Ravichandran’s this movie was delayed due to reasons unknown, but it has finally been announced to release on 28th; following this announcement, there’s a fresh wave of excitement about the film’s trailer, gathering new record of viewership.

Nakul plays the lead, the sportsperson handling the ball, and Mrudula, his love interest. As per the initial plan, the crew was entirely a different cast – Arulnidhi was first approached to be the hero, but he was later replaced by Nakul. There have been rumours doing the rounds that Jai replaced Nakul further later, but it was baseless. Heroine’s role also went in for a series of changes. Bindu Madhavi was initially cast in the lead lady role, but she ended up being replaced by newcomer Mrudula. In fact, even the title went for a change from ‘Achcham Thavir’ to ‘Vallinam’ which symbolises strength in chaste Tamil. The crew has had a number of interesting moments, including their 72-hour nonstop work schedule for a particular scene, near Chengalpet.

Marathi actor Atul Kulkarni plays a crucial role in the film, coaching the ambitious who want the millions of heads turning their way, toward a game of basketball. Interestingly, RJ Balaji is also part of the cast for a small yet crucial role. Music of the film was launched along with the trailer last year and this is the second time that Thaman has collaborated with Arivazhagan. The album is a sweet sweet of five interesting songs, the lyrics of one of which owes its credits to late Vaali.

Cricket is a religion here, and everybody watches it. And Arivazhagan presents to us here, the battle that basketball wins against the game that impresses millions. The director has chosen thriller genre yet again, but this time it’s all about adrenaline and the spirit of sport. It’s very well known that most other sports are usually shadowed by our never ending love for cricket. Wait till this weekend when the director will make our heads turn and cheer for an ambitious team at a winning game of basketball.

Ajith to appear in ‘Vallinam’

Director Arivazahagan who gave us Eeram one of the best horror films to have released in Tamil cinema, is back with Vallinam. This is the second film of the former assistant of Shankar that is going to hit the screens on this Friday. The film is touted as a refreshing sports based thriller on the lines of Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu and Chennai-600028.
The film stars Nakul and Mrudhula Baskar in the lead roles. Atul Kulkarni, Jagan and Jayaprakash are included in the supporting cast.

The special screening of the film was held yesterday and everyone whowatched it are raving about the film. They also share interesting information.

During the end credits the pictures of prominent sports personalities of India like Sachin Tendulkar, Viswanathan Anand, Leander Paes and Sania Mirza would roll on. In that list, the director Arivazhagan has included a photo of actor Ajith, as a tribute to his achievements in Motor racing. This is really going to make the fans feel proud.

'Vallinam' gets positive buzz from media

Aascar Films’ Vallinam’s directed by Eeram Fame Arivazhagan starring Nakul and Mrudhla press show was held last evening in Chennai.

The buzz coming out of the press show seems very positive.

The movie which centers around the sport of basket ball and how the sport is neglected in India compared to the more prominent cricket seems to have impressed critics.

Many of the reviewers gave a high level feedback about the movie in social media as refreshing and different.

Vallinam releases this Friday, Feb 28th. If the movie does well, it should be a big break for the hero Nakul. Also music director SS Thaman’s BGM was singled out as noteworthy.

Vallinam Movie Review

Director:Arivazhagan
Cast:Nakul, Mrudhula Basker, Atul
Music:S Thaman
Producer:Aascar Ravichandran

Arivazhagan, after the crisp and entertaining thriller Eeram has come out with a decent sport based film Vallinam. The film tries to highlight that there are other sports like basketball, which is more gripping than Cricket which is larger-than-life sport in India and craze among the youth.

Krishna (Nakul) is a good basketball player in Trichy. During a game an accident takes place and his best buddy Shiva (Kreshna) dies. To get away from the past, Krishna leaves Trichy and moves to a Chennai college. He finds that cricket is the most favoured game and given undue advantage in the college sports curriculum.

Slowly, due to circumstances mainly due to the villainous cricket captain (Telugu actor Siddharth) he starts basketball team in college. How Krishna’s determination and fierce dedication to triumph at all cost forms the rest of the story. He even wins over the rich heroine (Mridula) from the villainous cricket captain !

The trouble with Vallinam is that it goes all over trying to fit in mass commercial elements like fight, songs and unnecessary sentiments. Arivazhagan loses the plot half way through trying to make his hero a super action hero. The songs and the love angle sticks out like a sore thumb. The director should have concentrated only on the sports element it would have been a far better film.

Still it is an ok film. The camera work of Bhaskar, especially the climax basketball match is well shot. Thaman’s music and BGM is good. Nakul does a decent job but it is Jagan as the comedian who steals the show, while new boy Siddharth as the villain is menacing.

Vallinam is too long and should have been crisper to make it a bit more racy . On the whole, it is a timepass entertainer.
