Ithu Kathirvelan Kadhal Review

Director: S. R. Prabhakaran
Cast: Udhayanidhi Stalin, Nayantara
Music: Harris Jayaraj

Twenty minutes into the film and you know you are in for some kind of cocktail with all the essential Kollywood ingredients for a typical comedy.

You have a Mr Nice guy hero and a ‘Hanuman devotee’ who flips for a beautiful girl-next-door, a friend as love- guru, father- son sentiments, songs in foreign locations served with a rom-com garnish.

Kathir (Udhayanidhi) a Madurai lad goes to Coimbatore with a purpose and very soon flips for the charms of a beautiful Pavithra (Nayanthara) who is their neighbour. But Pavithra is already in love with her friend Gautham (Sundar) who is ‘not a nice guy’. Kathir who was looking out for his friend at college Mayil (Santhanam) bumps into suddenly and as expected he turns love advisor for our hero!

Meanwhile our hero who is head-over-heels in love with Pavithra has already sung two dream songs in some exotic outdoors!! But when Pavithra tells Kathir that she is already taken, our poor hero decides to go back to his home town not before telling her that Gautham is not the ‘Mr perfect” for her. On hearing this, she asks him to leave but in lightning speed realises her lover’s true colour. She comes back into Kathir’s life and they sing more duets (a kuthu song now) in Pollachi.

All hurdles for the lovers are sorted out and they live happily ever after. Is it the same SR Prabhakaran who gave us that interesting Sundarapandian ? Here the story is wafer-thin and weak and none of the characters are well-etched out. Every scene looks contrived and manipulated.

This film doesn't work because it's hard to empathize with any of the characters and the actors fail to rise above the flawed script. Udhayanidhi has improved leaps and bounds in all departments of acting; Nayan looks good and does what is expected from her. Santhanam repeats his friend act for the umpteent time and his one-liners falls flat. Songs by Harris are ok but placements are wrong and at times in your face.

The film is made in the template of a regular Tamil film style romcom which means hero and heroine fall in love for no particular reason and everything else falls into place with an emotionally manipulated climax. On the whole, it’s impossible to find much love for this film!

Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal Movie Preview

Cast:    Udhayanidhi Stalin, Nayanthara, Saranya Ponvannan,Santhanam,Naren(Aadukalen),Aadukalam Murugaraj
Direction:    S.R. Prabhakaran
Music:    Harris Jayaraj

The hit duos of OkOk are back, this time with the lovely lady Nayan,it’s time for a romcom! Udhaynidhi Stalin and Santhanam who sizzled with their timing comedy in their previous outing will be seen in IdhuKathirvelinKadhalunder the helm of S.R.Prabhakaran.

The director of the movie Prabhakaran will be taking a complete U turn from his previous flick Sundarapandiyan which portrayed the caste ridden society of Usulampatti and this time it will be a commercial outing with a sort of message that present age parents and youngsters will take back.

The film is supposed to go around the hero who is a taut Hanuman devote, and how his life takes a turn when a lovely gal crosses the road that he passes. The director has promised the viewers for a comical treat that would also showcase the world of carefree youngsters who would like to take control of their future, and how it contradicts to the views of their parents.

That said, the film has Santhanam playing the funnyman next to Udhay and the trailer is already receiving positive responses. Udhay will be facing the litmus test after OKOK went on to become a blockbuster of all sorts and pressure should mount on his performance. Santhanam is always best at what he does, so yet again he should be the driving force. Nayan’s comeback is rather strong, and the beautiful lady should thrill her fans.

Prabhakaran’s tryst with commercial cinema will be the one thing to look out for; his relatively cool demure and intelligent knowledge of the subject will be another factor. Two songs are already hit and Harris’s BGM need not be said!

Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal Music Review

Music:    Harris Jayaraj

The hit duo of Udhaynidhi Stalin and Santhanam are back together again, now under the watchful eyes of Prabhakaran who directed last year’s “Sundarapandian”. Nayan joins the fun cast and the movie is touted to be a romcom with Harris penning the music.

Maelae:Thamarai/Karthik

You’ve probably heard this song quite a handful number of times, that’s what the initial impression might be with Harris’s traditional hymns. However he springs up a surprise now and then with a quirky pop of jingles. The song is about the guys blindfolded love for that damsel who takes him altogether to a different level, and who better than Harris can bring the peppy ol duet. A winner by all means.

Anbe Anbe:

Veru reminiscent of Harris’s previous songs, it traverses through the melody parody and yet again Harish R does the trick for the composer. Yugabharathi’s soul rendering lyrics steals the limelight in this song and Harini’s hollowvocals outsmart Harish’s. Yet another song that immerses love between the lead pair transfused with some classical ragam reaches the boundary just on time. Albeit, traditional Harris no doubt.

Sara Sara:

Not the usual Harris you would go in search of, with a lot of folky attire the song just breezes through in fast paced style. This might be the new dimension of Harris’s style with love sparkling in a fiery unveiling. The breezy guitar is one of the solid backbones of this song and added to the vocals from Balaji & co, it’s definitely a varied attempt no doubt.

Pallaku:

Harris’s tryst with folk, especially Kuthu has been so far a great outing and this song spearheaded by Velmurugan is quite a number. Maintaining a pulse that doesn’t eat up the entire composition, its yet again a song for the boys, full in flow singing in pain. Yes, brings you the “Venam macha” mood instantly. The song picks up the pace over the later part of the interludes with muffled vocals of Jassie and Jayamoorthy.

Vizhyae:

It shoots of with a mood of rejoice and gives a whiff of happiness, however slows down as a song of despair should do. Aalaap Raju is best when delegated with melody and this song brings the best out of him taking it slow and neatly. The aroma is set for a pain stricken Romeo with his ranting and the sudden bit of Carnatic flavor brings it to life.
