Endrendrum Punnagai Movie Review

Director: Ahmed
Cast: Jiiva, Santhanam,Trisha Krishnan
Music: Harris Jayaraj

Don't sign off on your list of the Best Films of 2013 till you watch Endrendrum Punnagai, a feel good film which will make you smile even after you walk out of the hall. It's a feel – good breezy entertainer and it's got its heart in the right place.

The film works big time due to director Ahmed’s well- written script which encompass friendship, romance and an emotional father-son angle which has been handled sensitively. And the overall packaging of exotic locations, shot compositions, chemistry between lead actors and great music by Harris Jayaraj, makes it connect with the urban youth.

The film's first half breezes by effortlessly as we are sorryed into the life of three close, free-spirited friends from school- Gautham (Jiiva), Sree (Vinay Rai) and Baby (Santhanam) who run an ad agency. Among them Gautham is the son of a painter (Nassar) who has a not-so-good childhood and hence he hates women and also thrusts the same on his two friends. The three friends make a pact that they will remain bachelors forever. But two of them are unable to stick to the promise and friendship sours.

The film works to a large extent because of the inherent optimism in the plot and the sheer good-naturedness of its characters. First and foremost Jiiva-Santhanam-Vinay friendship and bonding looks real and there is perfect on-screen vibe between the trio.

The love track of Jiiva and Trisha their initial reluctance followed by fleeting eye contacts slowly heats up, you can feel the love temperature rising. The heroines Trisha and Andrea are not mere eye candy their characters has been well etched. The father (Nassar)-son (Jiiva) emotional mine field has been shown without any melodrama.

Of the cast, Trisha fits her role to the tee, reflecting just that slight hint of cold detachment that the part requires from her. Nassar nails it with a performance that carefully treads the fine line between a man craving for his son's love and naughty senior. Jiiva turns in an inspired performance as a man who's covered with issues from head to toe. He conveys his inner turmoil by losing his cool one time too many, but in the process he creates a character you can instantly empathise with.

Santhanam with his spot-on comedy, measured histrionics and his immense likeability is a revelation and he provides some hearty laughs. What a relief not to see him as a love guru and sidekick of the hero. For Vinay Rai it is easily his best performance till date and is the film's surprise packet. Andrea makes her presence felt despite the small role.

Harris Jayaraj’s peppy music has been integrated into the story, and it is his best work in recent times. The songs have been beautifully picturised and BGM is in sync with the films rom-com mood. The rich look of the film is mainly due to camerawork of Madhi and his lighting is top class. Praveen-Srikanth editing is seamless as one scene melds to another effortlessly.

It's evident that the film's main motive is to give you a good time, but it's commendable that writer-director I Ahmed chose to weave a message into the story. Watch it because it's the season to be jolly, and good laughs are guaranteed.

I love doing comedy: Trisha

Trisha is back after almost a year, with Endrendrum Punnagai releasing big on Friday (Dec 20).  The actress who knows what she wants in life has completed a decade in movies and is currently shooting for her first Kannada film. Speaking to Sridevi Sreedhar from Hubli, Trisha opens up.

Endrendrum Punnagai is an important film for you to assert yourself as a saleable heroine..Comments?
I think any film is important to keep the saleability going. But yes, this one is special because I am having a release after almost a year and all my fans are also excited.

What is your role?
It’s a very simple girl next door character, stubborn, conservative, and highly principled. A very strong character and my director Ahmed has made sure that it comes out in the film

Are romantic comedies your comfort zone?
I love doing comedy and infact that’s something that I enjoy doing. Rom-com’s are fun always and when I work in such genre, I feel good, chilled and jolly.
After 10 years in the industry, what attracts you most to a film?
Actually at this point of time, I like the fact that I can venture out into anything and I feel like I have nothing to lose. So I follow my intuitions and take time to select good scripts.

It’s your first film with Jiiva.. Comments
I met Jiiva 11 yrs back for a star night and I’ve always found him intelligent and most importantly non-filmi. I had loads of fun shooting with him. He is friendly and eager to be involved in any aspect of the film.

Are you planning to settle down soon?
(He..he) I'd like to settle down eventually and that's for sure. Its always nice to share life with that special someone (smiles).

Endrendrum Punnagai- A sleeper hit!

The romantic fun film Endrendrum Punnagai starring Jiiva, Santhanam, Trisha, Vinay and Andrea has become a hit.

The film which opened on December 20 to a lukewarm opening has picked up in its second weekend due to good word of mouth (WOM).

Red Giants who are distributing the film strategically picked up good screens especially in multiplexes and played it without much fanfare.

They knew that the film content would speak and by second weekend, film has become a hit.

Endrendrum Punnagai collections across Tamil Nadu have picked up with multiplexes giving it more shows in second week. Mayajaal in the first week gave only 14 shows but by second week it has doubled to 28, making Endrendrum Punnagai the most preferred movie.

'Endrendrum Punnagai' completes 25 days

Red Giants have another hit with the Jiiva-Trisha-Santhanam-Vinay-Andrea starrer Endrendrum Punnagai directed by Ahmed. The romcom about friendship celebrates 25 days today (Jan 12) all over Tamil Nadu. It is still running in all multiplexes, inspite of Pongal rush.

Remember Endrendrum Punnagai which started slowly when it released on December 20, went on to become a hit due to strong word-of-mouth.  The number of screens increased from second week.

The film worked as it became a favourite with the youth and family audiences. The music of the film by Harris Jayaraj became chartbusters and created a buzz around the film. And above all the three male leads Jiiva-Santhanam- Vinay had terrific on-screen bonhomie, which worked.
