Medical entrances in India are extremely competitive and very few are able to meet the standards that are required to become a medical professional. There are over 250 universities and ten thousand colleges in India to choose from; some of the top colleges are listed below.

All India Institute of medical Science (AIIMS), Delhi. AIIMS, Delhi was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with an intent of developing teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches in order to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India and also to bring together educational facilities of the uppermost order for the training of recruits in all important fields of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.

Christian Medical College, Vellore. The college started in the 1900’s by the founder Dr. Ida Sophia who had only one bed in her father’s home. It has grown exponentially since that time and is ranked among one of the best colleges in India. The fees in the college are comparatively low in order to ensure that brilliance and excellence are not sacrificed on the altar of financial profits. Community Medicine is given major importance, a part of which includes living in a village for a period of time and providing practical knowledge and help; this contributes positively to the life and health of rural people. All the medical graduates of CMC are required to serve for at least two years in health care facilities accredited by the institution to be meeting social needs.

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). This college was set up in 1948 after the Second World War. The remnants of the Indian Army Medical Corps units were amalgamated into one unit which is now known as Armed Forces Medical College. In the last five decades, the college has grown to become one of the premier colleges in the country which educate students who go on to become one of the best professionals in their fields.

JIPMER – Jawahar Lal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research. The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is one of the top five medical schools in India and is situated in Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry), a union territory town in southern India that is near the shore of Bay of Bengal. JIPMER is funded by the Indian central government however with autonomy to conduct its internal administration. JIPMER is an educational institute that undertakes postgraduate and undergraduate medical training and is also a hospital that provides low-cost medical care to a numerous patients.

The Government General Hospital. This is one of the leading Institutions in the country which was started on 16th November 1664 to treat soldiers of the East India Company. After the Anglo French war, the hospital moved out of the fort and it took 20 long years before it could inhabit the present permanent place in 1772.A private medical hall was regularized as a medical school. The Governor publicized an order to make the school a state sponsored one and connected it to the General Hospital. From 1st October 1850 this hospital was made into a college called Madras Medical College. In 1852, the first batch of students graduated and was granted the Diploma of Graduate of the Madras Medical College. In 1857, it gained association to the University of Madras. It is one of the oldest medical institutes in India.

Grant Medical College. Grant Medical College is a medical school that is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. It is one of the premier medical schools in India and also one of the oldest that provides western medicine as an academic discipline. It is also affiliated to the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy Group of Hospitals includes the J. J. Hospital, St George Hospital, Goculdas Tejpal Hospital, and Cama and Albess Hospital. The college accepts two hundred students every year for undergraduate courses and more for post graduate courses.

Maulana Azad Medical College. The MAMC Campus has witnessed numerous episodes in the history of Delhi, and is surely the most historic campus around. The college is named after a patriot and educationist, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. This building was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, on 26th February 1961. Since that time, the college has trained more than 5000 medical graduates, many dental graduates and around 2000 post-graduates.

King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College. The main priorities of this institution include medical relief, medical education and research. The Seth G.S. Medical College, the 12th medical college in the country, started on first June 1925 with forty-six students, and six of them were women. The next year saw the formal opening for this college and it was affiliated to the University of Bombay. The hospital had 125 beds and started work in January 1926.

Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal. It opened on June 30, 1953. Only the pre-clinical section was available in Manipal and the students needed to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. However, it became a full-fledged independent college since the clinical program started at Manipal in 1969. The first college in the private sector, KMC ranks among the top five medical colleges in the country today. Students from over fifty Countries have graduated from KMC, and the degrees are recognized worldwide.

University College of Medical Sciences or U.C.M.S. U.C.M.S is a constituent college of the University of Delhi that provides Medical Education in New Delhi, India. It was founded in the year 1971, due to the efforts of the then Health Minister of New Delhi. It was proposed by the minister to provide medical education to every student who was eligible and wished to become a doctor. In that year classes began in the makeshift Department of Chemistry, Delhi University, North Campus. This developed into U.C.M.S. The practical were held in Meerut Medical College and then shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in South Delhi. Again in 1986 it was shifted to Dilshad Garden where it now operates as a teaching hospital.

B.J Medical College. This college started in 1871 which was then called the Ahmedabad Medical School; it only had 14 students at the time of its inception. This is one of the premier institutes and is also the biggest hospital in Asia. Post graduation is provided in 15 branches of medicine and in five branches of surgery. It also provides super specialty courses, postgraduate diploma in ten branches and also medical degrees for non-medical people.

The King George Medical College, Lucknow. This college was established in 1911, has been a leader among medical education institutions in the country. On 16th September 2002, by an act passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh on the college was transferred under a new university; the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. The institution is committed to the propagation and improvement of knowledge in biomedical sciences and establishing itself as a centre of quality in tertiary level health care in the state.

The last decade has seen exponential growth in the economy as well as in the field of technology. This has brought about a major change in the education systems and the number of students opting for a post graduate degree in business management. There are hundreds of business schools in India that offer quality education and provide state-of-the-art technology for enhancing the quality of education. Some of them are listed below.

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM A) This institute is regarded to be the best business school in India and offers four programs in Management. The Post Graduate Program which is equivalent to MBA, the Fellowship Program in Management which is equivalent to a PHD. Other programs include faculty Development Program for Management teachers and Trainers and the Management Development Program which serves as a refresher for managers.

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM C) The oldest of the IIMs, IIM Calcutta is one of the top three Business schools in India. The institute offers three full time programs. The PGDM – Post Graduate Program in Management which is equivalent to MBA, the FPM – Fellowship Program in Management, the PGDCM – Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Aided Management. The institute also offers part time PGDBM – Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management for managers who have relevant work experience. Management development programs are also held at regular intervals for middle as well as top level managers.

Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM B). IIM Bangalore offers two year full time PGP – Post Graduate Program in Management (equivalent to MBA) and a FPM – Fellowship Program in Management. A candidate has o take a common admission test called CAT for both the courses. The institute also offers part time non residential Post Graduate Program in Software Enterprise Management. There is another separate entrance test for this program. This business school is one of the top three business schools in India.

Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM L). Located in Lucknow this institute offers a two year full time residential Post Graduate Program in Management and a FPM program lasting four years. Both these programs require a candidate to take Common Admisson Test. The institute also has an interesting student exchange program where students of this B-School visit other premier B-Schools the world over. Students and faculty from these internationally reputed B-Schools in turn visit IIM Lucknow. It is ranked amongst the top five B-Schools in India.

XLRI – Xavier Labor Research Institute, Jamshedpur. Xavier Labour Research Institute, popularly known as XLRI was established in 1949 at Jamshedpur. The institute offers two courses at the post graduation level in management – a post graduate diploma in Business administration and a post graduate diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations (PMIR).

ISB – Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. Indian School of Business, Hyderabad is emerging as a preferred choice for MBA aspirants who want a one year course. It is still building its permanent faculty, however, the ISB has created excellent visiting faculty model with some of the world’s leading academicians from Wharton, Kellogg, Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Duke and Texas among others. The school offers a one year Post Graduate Program in Management.

FMS – Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi. FMS is counted amongst the top ten B-Schools in the country and one of the two attached to a university amongst the top ten. The full time program of FMS started in the year 1967. Usually the demand for students is very high where students are placed between a couple of days.

Indian Institute of Management, Indore (IIM I). The Indian Institute of Management, Indore is the newest addition to the IIM community. IIMI has a two-year post graduate program emphasizing on experiential learning, IT orientation, and Social Sensitivity. It offers the following programs -The Post Graduate Program which is a two year program, it is made for the development of teachers, researchers, and trainers for management education, and Executive Post-Graduate Program, an 18-months program which is designed for working executives.

Indian Institute of Management, Calicut (IIM K – Kozhikode). The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode was established in 1996, and is the fifth Indian Institute of Management. Its academic program includes various long term full time diploma programs such as the Post Graduate Program in Management, and a many short term executive education program. The institute also offers an Interactive Distance Learning Program.

Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai (JBIMS). The Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, (JBIMS) was founded by the University of Bombay in 1965 in partnership with the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University with the objective of pioneering and encouraging post – graduate management education in India. It has been ranked in Asia’s Top 25 business schools by Asia Inc.

After the inception of industrialization, engineering as a career option has become popular. There are various fields and specializations that are offered by Indian engineering colleges. Even though India is a developing country and lacks the state-of-the-art technology, it still offers quality education and the promise of a blooming career. There are many engineering colleges scattered across the country and some are considered world class educational institutes. Some colleges that provide high quality education are listed below.

IIT Kharagpur.The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (also known as IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP) is an autonomous institute that was established in 1951 by the Government of India. It is the first of the thirteen IIT’s to be established and is recognized as an institute of national importance by the Government of India. Regarded as one of the best engineering institutions in India, IIT Kharagpur has ranked among the top engineering college in the academic ranking of Indian colleges by various engineering education surveys such as India Today and Outlook.

IIT Kanpur. IIT Kanpur is second among ranking after IIT Kharagpur and the courses offered include Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering Civil Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Management Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

IIT Mumbai. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is an autonomous university in Powai, in north central Mumbai. IIT Mumbai has the second oldest campus among all the other IIT’S and is the largest National institute in Maharashtra. The institute is famous for the record number of placements and thus attracts many students, not only from India but from abroad as well. IIT Mumbai has ranked as Asia’s third best institute in science and technology.

IIT Delhi. The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (previously College of Engineering & Technology Delhi), also known as IIT-Delhi or IIT-D, is a major college of engineering in Delhi, India. Although the college is one of the best educational institutes it has gained some notoriety in the recent past because of some ragging cases. However, corrective steps were taken by authorities and incidents of ragging have dwindled if not stopped. The various disciplines that are taught include mathematics, computer science, civil engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, applied mechanics, biochemical engineering and electrical engineering.

IIT Chennai. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras is an exquisite engineering and technology school located in Chennai (formerly Madras) in southern India. It is also officially recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Indian government and is one of the best engineering institutions in India. It was founded in 1959 with the technical and financial assistance by West Germany. This institute ranks third among all the IIT’s in India and was established by the government of India through an act of parliament for providing world class education and research facilities in technology and engineering.

IIT Guwahati. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India, located in the state of Assam in India. It is the sixth college in the IIT fraternity. This college is also recognized as an Institute of official importance by the Indian government. There are eleven departments which cover the various educational disciplines offered by other IIT’s; however it may not have disciplines such as applied mechanics and biochemical engineering.

IIT Roorkee. The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is situated in Roorkee, a town in Uttarakhand, India. It started as Thomson college of Civil Engineering in the year 1847 by the British; however it was renamed as University of Roorkee in year 1949. Before independence, it awarded the degrees of the Allahabad University, and the University of Calcutta to which it was successively affiliated, including its own diplomas. It was rebuilt in 1948 as the University of Roorkee, and also has the privilege of holding the title of the first engineering university of modern India. IIT Roorkee is ranked 63 in the QS.com Asian University Rankings of 2009.

The College of Engineering, Guindy. The College of Engineering, Guindy in Chennai, is one of the four colleges of Anna University. It started in May 1794 as a School of Survey and was established as a college in 1859 under the Madras University. It is one of the oldest technical institutes in the world and in India. This institute has the distinction of introducing engineering courses from the beginning of the year 1894. Many branches of engineering were subsequently established after the introduction of Mechanical engineering courses in 1894. This is also the first institute to establish a computer center in India in 1963.

The Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University). The Institute of Technology is the engineering school of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi. It has the distinction of being one of the India’s oldest and highest-ranked engineering colleges. It is a residential and co-educational institute and is situated in an outstanding campus spread over nearly a thousand acres on the banks of the holy river Ganga. The admission for undergraduate students is through IIT – Joint Entrance Examination and for post-graduates is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

VIT University. VIT University (formerly Vellore Institute of Technology) is a private co-educational university located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The university was founded in 1984 by G. Viswanathan, who is now its chancellor. The student strength is more than seven thousand and the institute conducts an exam called VIT engineering entrance exam. The exam is for admissions to B.tech courses and other courses such as bioinformatics and biomedical engineering programs.
