Puli Pongal
Ingredients:
Raw rice - 1 cup
Green gram – 1 cup
Tamarind – a lemon-sized ball
Peanuts – 2 tsp
Sesame oil - 3 tbsp
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Black gram - 1tsp
Red chilli – 1
Water – 2 cups
Asafoetida powder - a pinch
Curry leaves – a few
Salt - to taste
Method:
Fry the raw rice and green gram for five minutes till they change colour. Grind this mixture coarsely and keep aside.
Soak tamarind in two cups of water and keep aside.
In a pressure pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds.
When it splutters, add black gram, red chillies, peanuts, asafoetida powder and curry leaves and fry till golden brown.
Add the rice mixture, tamarind juice, turmeric powder, salt and mix everything well. Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 20 minutes, stirring in between.
Add curry leaves and serve hot.
