1. JOINING BOTH PALMS TOGETHER TO GREET
In Hindu culture, people greet each other by joining their palms – termed as “Namaskar.” The general reason behind this tradition is that greeting by joining both the palms means respect. However, scientifically speaking, joining both hands ensures joining the tips of all the fingers together; which are denoted to the pressure points of eyes, ears, and mind. Pressing them together is said to activate the pressure points which helps us remember that person for a long time. And, no germs since we don’t make any physical contact!


2. WHY YOU CAN’T CUT YOUR NAILS AT NIGHT
There was no electricity during the time of our ancestors. One could hurt himself while cutting nails at night.



3. WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE A BATH AFTER A FUNERAL?
Just to prevent infection from the dead body. A human body is not safe after death.



4. SITTING ON THE FLOOR & EATING
This tradition is not just about sitting on floor and eating, it is regarding sitting in the “Sukhasan” position and then eating. Sukhasan is the position we normally use for Yoga asanas. When you sit on the floor, you usually sit cross legged – In sukhasana or a half padmasana (half lotus), which are poses that instantly bring a sense of calm and help in digestion, it is believed to automatically trigger the signals to your brain to prepare the stomach for digestion.




5. WHY WE START WITH SPICE & END WITH SWEET
Our ancestors have stressed on the fact that our meals should be started off with something spicy and sweet dishes should be taken towards the end. The significance of this eating practice is that while spicy things activate the digestive juices and acids and ensure that the digestion process goes on smoothly and efficiently, sweets or carbohydrates pulls down the digestive process. Hence, sweets were always recommended to be taken as a last item.


6. WHY YOU SHOULDN’T SWEEP THE FLOOR AT NIGHT?
Our generation says it calls for bad luck which is somehow correct as sweeping at night under dark light can sweep some important stuff to.



7. WHY GIRLS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ENTER KITCHEN OR TEMPLE DURING PERIODS?
To give rest to them as they feel discomfort during periods. Also, there were no sanitary napkins in the past when these rules were made.


8. WHY YOU SHOULDN’T COOK DURING A DEATH DAY IN THE FAMILY?
This ritual was created to give the family time and rest, as death makes people sad. In such conditions a person never wants to do such things.


9. WHY YOU SHOULDN’T WASH YOUR HAIR ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS?
Ancestors always knew the value of water.


10. WHY PEOPLE FAST DURING NAVRATRAS

Our living style has changed over a period of time. Navratras comes twice a year. Both the months of Navratras are months of changing season and eating habits. Navratras gives enough time to body to adjust and prepare itself for changing season. During Navratras months it is marked that people clear their body system by keeping fasts, meditating, gaining positive energy and self confidence and finally get ready for challenges of changed season.
