According to a study, published by the Red Cross, 3 out of 4 parents don’t have the first-aid skills to save their children from suffocating. According to Joe Mulligan, chief of first-aid at the British Red Cross, “Babies can be very curious and love to explore their environment by putting things in their mouths.”
That’s why we show you four situations and how you should act in each one:
1. Your baby is choking
- If your baby is choking, and you notice that they are struggling to breathe, you should begin to give them five pats on their back.
- Then, you can give up to five pats on their chest and point them to face downward.
- If the situation doesn’t improve, call emergency services immediately.
2. Your baby is unconscious
- Turn your baby around and check to see if they’re breathing correctly.
- Ask somebody to call emergency services immediately.
- Give them five rescue breaths or “mouth-to-mouth,” covering your baby’s nose.
- Give them 30 chest compressions, pressing firmly in the middle of their chest with two fingers.
- Following the compressions, give them two more rescue breaths or “mouth-to-mouth.”
3. Your baby is having an attack or convulsion
- To protect them from possible injury, you can place a blanket underneath their head and body.
- Lower the baby’s body temperature by removing their clothes or opening a window.
- When the convulsion ends, help your baby to rest on their side, with the head slightly leaning back to make sure their airways are open.
4. Your baby suffers a burn
- Cool the burn with room-temperature water for 10 minutes.
- Cover the area to prevent infection and possible complications.
- If the burn is serious, call emergency services immediately.
