Everyone wants to be healthy, so lots of people try to stick to a healthy lifestyle which presupposes drinking certain amount of water every day. Though, here the minds of scientists vary and they all give different recommendations on the subject. And the person is left to guess or decide on his/her own how much water will be beneficial for their health.
Benefits and risks
But all of them agree on numerous benefits that come with water when we drink it adequately. When drinking enough water people feel more energetic. And as your entire body lives on water and needs it to function properly, you can imagine how the lack of water can affect you. In case of dehydration, your body won’t be able to function as it did before.
Ideal daily intake of water
One should know that every day a person loses water not only through urine but also through breath, perspiration and bowel movements.
So to compensate the release of water a person should drink an adequate amount of it every day. Scientists have counted and agreed on 13 cups (3 liters) of beverages a day for men, and 9 cups (2.2 liters) for women. And mind that you count into the total amount not only water but other fluids as well.
Keep in mind: “Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day!”
Cases when the rule doesn’t apply:
Illnesses or health conditions
If a person has a heart and/or kidney condition, the amount of liquid should be lower. In that case, it’s recommended that a doctor calculate it individually. But when a person has fever or diarrhea, you need to drink more water.
Exercises
As any physical activity makes you sweat, it means you lose water. Make sure you replenish it starting with extra 1.5 to 2.5 cups of water.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
During these periods women need more water than on a regular basis, so The Institute of Medicine recommends for pregnant women to drink about 10 cups of water a day and those who breast-feed — 13 cups of fluids daily.
Environment
Weather is also an important factor influencing water intake. So, when it’s hot outside, the daily amount of liquid should be increased to prevent you from exhaustion and dehydration.
