Waking Up At Night To Go To The Bathroom Is Annoying, But It’s Good To Identify The Reasons Why!
Normally, the amount of urine the body produces is reduced at night. This allows most people to sleep between six and eight hours straight, without waking up to go to the bathroom. However, some people do wake up in the middle of the night to urinate, interrupting their sleep cycle. While it’s normal for this to happen occasionally, such as after a late dinner or a few drinks before going to bed, if it becomes frequent, it could be a symptom that your body has reduced its capacity to retain urine. There are several possible causes, including:
Drinking too many fluids before going to bed
Drinking caffeine or alcohol after dinner will likely increase your water consumption, making you go to the bathroom more often. Reducing the amount of liquid you drink at night could solve the problem.
Medication
Certain drugs, especially diuretics and cold medicine, can affect your bladder and increase the frequency of your need to urinate.
Getting older
As people get older, they need to urinate more frequently. This is due to changes in the bladder wall. We aren’t capable of holding in so much urine. Plus, the muscles of the bladder get weaker as we get older.
Prostate problems
Men who suffer prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate can have difficulty retaining urine.
Urinary tract infection
Waking up to urinate at night is often a sign of an urinary tract infection in adults and children. For kids, it could also be a possible sign of juvenile diabetes.
Cystitis
This condition results in the inflammation of the bladder, preventing it from functioning normally. Generally, cystitis is caused by microorganisms and is a type of urinary tract infection.
Pregnancy
Frequently waking up to use the bathroom could be an early sign of pregnancy. After giving birth, frequent urination could mean a prolapse of the bladder and pelvic organ. This puts additional pressure on the urinary tract, increasing the need to urinate.
Chronic illnesses
Frequent urination at night can be a sign of chronic illness, including heart disease, circulatory conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, restless leg syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or sleep apnea. In this case, other symptoms are usually also present.
