6 Natural Remedies That May Help Relieve Depression

Standard treatment of depression usually involves antidepressants, psychotherapy, or both. And there are some natural treatments that may also provide relief. They include:
1. St. John’s wort
St. John’s wort is widely used as a treatment of depression in Europe. It’s thought that the herb raises the levels of neurotransmitter serotonin – that’s how certain antidepressants work. But research on its effectiveness is inconclusive, and St. John’s wort should be used with reservation, because it can interfere with various medications, including anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin), contraceptive pills, and some cancer medicines. If you want to try St. John’s wort to relieve your depression, consult with your doctor first and don’t forget to mention any medications you’re taking.
2. Omega-3 fatty acids
Good food sources of omega 3 fatty acids are fish (such as salmon, sardines, tuna, herring, and trout), flaxseed, flax oil, and walnuts. Another option is fish oil supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for brain function and are beneficial for heart health. According to some studies, omega-3 fatty acids can help relieve mild and moderate depression.
3. Saffron
Saffron extract may be beneficial for relieving depression, but there isn’t enough research on its effects. And it should be taken in moderate amounts, because consuming too much of this herb can cause unpleasant side effects.
4. SAMe
SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) may improve depression symptoms to some extent, but the US Food and Drug Administration doesn’t consider it a medication. It shouldn’t be taken together with antidepressants – the combination can produce serious side effects. Excessive amount of SAMe alone can cause GI symptoms, such as nausea, indigestion, and constipation.
5. Folate
Folate deficiency may result in symptoms of depression. Folic acid supplements are available, but it’s best to keep your folate levels up by eating foods that contain folate. Try adding dark leafy greens, beans, lentils, sunflower seeds, avocados, and fortified cereals to your diet.
6. Zinc
There may be a connection between zinc deficiency and depression. Taking a zinc supplement or adding foods that contain zinc to your diet may help improve your symptoms.
If you are depressed, you can try these remedies as an addition to your prescribed treatment, but keep in mind that they are not approved by the doctors for the treatment of depression and will have little to no effect in severe cases of depression.
