What Is Mold Allergy?
« on: August 12, 2017, 12:15:42 PM »
Mold allergy manifests in the same way as many other allergies: sufferers usually have itchy and watery eyes, coughing and other respiratory symptoms when they come into contact with mold. The best way to prevent allergic reactions is to avoid mold and take medications.

Symptoms of mold allergy include:

>> sneezing;

>> coughing;

>> runny or stuffy nose;

>> itchy nose and throat;

>> itchy, watery eyes;

>> dry, scaly skin.

Symptoms range from mild to severe and may get worse in certain conditions, such as being in places with high concentration of mold. If the symptoms are severe, you should consult your doctor.

You should be especially careful if you have both mold allergy and asthma, because exposure to mold can trigger a severe asthma attack.

It’s also important to note that not all types of mold cause allergic reactions. You may be allergic to one type of mold, and other types will not cause you any trouble.

There is a number of risk factors that can lead to mold allergy or make existing symptoms worse:

>> family history of allergy;

>> being constantly exposed to mold at work (likely to happen if your occupation is dairy work, baking, carpentry, etc.);

>> living in a place with high levels of humidity or/and bad ventilation.

There are some steps you can take keep your mold allergy symptoms in check:

>> when it’s cool and damp outside, sleep with your windows closed to prevent outdoor mold from getting inside your room;

>>put on a mask when doing housework in moldy places;

>> try to avoid going outside in foggy or damp weather – that’s when the concentration of outdoor mold is high.

Take the following steps to prevent mold from growing in your home:

>>get rid of dampness in your basement;

>>use a dehumidifier in damp rooms in your house;

>>use air conditioners with HEPA filters;

>>replace filters on your furnace and air conditioners regularly;

>>make sure all rooms in your house are sufficiently ventilated, especially bathrooms

>>don’t put carpets into basements and bathrooms;

>>regularly clean out rain gutters and remove leaves from around the foundation of the house;

>>make sure organic plant containers clean and dry;

>>throw away or recycle old books and newspapers if they became moldy.
