Here Is How To Prevent A Sunburn And What To Do To Make It Heal Faster If You Get One

Summer is the season to enjoy the sun, and use it for our benefit – to give our skin a nice tan. But let’s not forget what happens if we get too much of it. Sunburn results from excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial sources.

Symptoms of sunburn include:

- redness or pinkness;
– blistering;
– pain and/or itching;
– swelling;
– affected area feels warm;
– in bad cases – nausea, headache, fever, chills.

Any part of your body needs to be protected; sunburn can affect even your eyes.

You should see a doctor if you have these symptoms:

- the affected area is large and is blistering;

– you experience high fever, chills, nausea, headache, dizziness;
– the sunburn hasn’t improved after a few days;
– symptoms of an infection (growing pain, tenderness, and swelling; septic blisters; read streaks around the open blister).

Risk factors for sunburn are:

- working in the sun for long hours;
– having fair skin, blue eyes, and red or blond hair;
– taking medicine that makes you prone to burns;
– drinking alcohol in the hot sun;
– frequent exposure of unprotected skin to artificial sources of UV light.

Excessive exposure to dangerous UV radiation may even result in skin cancer.

See what you can do to relieve the sunburn at home:

- use over-the-counter analgesics;
– moisturize the burned area; aloe vera is good for it;
– cool the burns using compresses, a cool bath or shower is also relieving;

- try not to break blisters;
– moisturize the peeling skin;
– while the sunburn heals, limit the exposure to sunlight as much as possible;

– don’t use “-caine” products, e.g. benzocaine.

What you can do to prevent sunburn:

– try to limit exposure to the sun during hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
– avoid artificial tanning;

– wear clothes that protect you from sunburns;
– use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more;
– put on sunglasses when you are outside;
– learn what medications that you take may increase the sensitivity to sunlight
