A new study has surprised everybody with its findings. According to lab tests, smelling food can make us gain weight more quickly!

The investigation was carried out by experts from the University of California, Berkeley in the US. After carrying out tests on obese mice, they discovered that the sense of smell was closely related to weight gain.

To perform the experiment, researchers did the test with two groups of mice: Ones with no sense of smell and others with a perfectly functioning sense of smell.

The result was conclusive: Although both groups of mice ate equal amounts, those mice who had no sense of smell experienced 16% more weight loss than the group whose sense of smell worked fine.

“This research is one of the first studies which shows that, if we manipulate the olfactory perception, we can effectively change the way in which the brain achieves balance and regulates energy,” said Céline Riera, from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

As well as favoring weight control in obese people, the specialized journal Cell Metabolism, presented this research, saying that the results could help people with eating disorders including anorexia, rapid weight loss and even Parkinson’s syndrome.
