Kanithan- Audio launched by AR Rahman

The audio launch of Kalaipuli S Thanu’s Kanithan has happened yesterday (January 27) in Chennai. ‘Isai Puyal’ AR Rahman launched the album and AR Murugadoss received it from him.

Drums Sivamani, the music composer of the film has performed live at the event and his gurus Vikku Vinayakram and Karaikudi Mani have graced the function.

Speaking at the function, Kalaipuli S Thanu said “Kanithan’s director TN Santhosh will be one of the biggest directors in India. The script will surely stir the entire nation”.

The veteran producer also said that Kanithan heroine, Catherine Tresa has a bright future like Hema Malini. Talking about AR Rahman, Thanu said “Because of the fact that Rahman is accepting lesser number of films, many young music composers are still getting offers”.

AR Murugadoss was in full praise for Thanu, the director said “Without Thanu sir’s support, I wouldn’t have done a film like Thuppakki. He also helped for the smooth release of Kaththi. When bomb threat was announced in Sathyam, many multiplexes were scared to screen the film but once Thanu sir intervened, all the issues got solved”.

AR Murugadoss has also said that even before the completion of Thupakki, Thanu gave advance to both TN Santhosh and Anand Shankar. “In fact all the assistant directors who worked in Thuppakki are directors now”, added AR Murugadoss.

Earlier due to the unexpected delay caused by AR Rahman, SP Balasubramaniam apologized and left the event as he had another appointment. Yes, the audio launch was supposed to begin by 1 PM  but Rahman reached the venue only at 3 PM.

Kanithan-Audio review

Cast: Atharvaa, Catherine Tresa
Music: Sivamani
Direction: TN Santhosh

Album Analysis:

Yappa Chappa
Singers: Anirudh, Kalpana
Although the prelude starts off badly, Sivamani keeps the listeners engaged with funky percussions. Anirudh’s vocals and the insensate lyrics kick in later and infuse a catchy tune. The effort put in by Anirudh to get the slang right is commendable.

Maiyal Maiyal
Singers: Haricharan, Swetha
The best of the album! The tune of ‘Maiyal Maiyal’ is probably the weakest link in the entire song as the arrangements, scale progression & the interludes are better than the staple pallavi of the track. The charanam portions step up the notch a bit and makes for a decent listen.

Modern Ponnuthaan
Singers: Karthik, Blaaze, Runa Sivamani
‘Modern Ponnuthaan’ is a mixed bag. The lyrics don’t work, the beats work. The tune doesn’t but arrangements do. The interlude arrangements for the rap sound mostly derivative(read Pettairap & Mukkabula). The song does go into a ‘competition’ mode after Karthik enters the song and the remaining portions are marginally better. Mostly, will work with the visuals!

Che Guevara
Singers: SP Balasubhramaniam
‘Che Guevara’ is a track where the composer shows off his fantastic percussion skills. With SPB leading the vocals, the track is pulsating to say the least. The veteran singer does add an extra dimension to the track with his vocals but is the tune hummable? Well, not really.

I Viralgal
Singers:  MC AK, Adhrija, Ishan
‘I Viralgal’ is a rap song in its entirety and don’t let the initial hook mislead you. The percussions keep the track racy enough but the structure of the tune is not simple enough for us to sing along. Get ready for some dance moves when this song features in the movie though.
On the whole, ‘Kanithan’ tries to encompass songs that are foot-tapping and pulsating but it doesn’t succeed entirely. Most of the songs require multiple listening and it is easy to shun them off after hearing them once as the tunes are not catchy enough. After an impressive debut in ‘Arima Nambi’, Sivamani’s followup lacks the charge.

Kanithan review

Director: TN Santhosh
Cast: Atharvaa Murali, Catherine Tresa

It’s quite common for protégés to follow the route taken by their gurus-Debutant director TN Santhosh an assistant to AR Murugadoss follows the Thuppakki style of film making but too many songs and loopholes in the script prevent Kanithan from being a perfect racy action entertainer.

Gautham (Atharvaa Murali) is an engineering graduate but works as a TV journalist in a small channel. Interestingly Gautham's dad (Naren) is a news reader with Doordarshan and grand dad was a news reader in All India Radio. Just like AR Murugadoss’ recent movies, here too the film moves at a leisure pace in the beginning, where hero falls in love with the heroine (Catherine Tresa) at first sight and dances with her in a pub. When everything goes well, Gautham gets arrested by cops for cheating banks by getting lakhs of rupees with fake documents and degree certificates. The rest of the film is all about how Gautham tracks down the master mind(Tarun Arora) behind the fake certificate scam. Director TN Santhosh is definitely talented and one could feel it with the 90 minutes nonstop mind game and racy action sequences. Of course, the characterizations and scenes have heavy Thuppakki hangover yet the film engages us with the effective portions. When things start moving at a rapid pace, Santhosh introduces unwanted birthday celebration sequence followed by a song, which definitely tests our patience. The first thirty minutes of the film is filled with two songs and silly romantic portions, which could have been avoided. To be honest, Kanithan is not a bad film and it has a good theme with solid engaging moments but why spoil it with unnecessary songs? Atharvaa Murali has all necessary qualities to become a mass action hero. The actor effortlessly performs action sequences and looks comfortable with the racy steps too, however he has to work on his dialogue delivery and comic portions to make it big. Catherine Tresa looks cute in the movie but sadly has nothing much to perform. Tarun Arora looks extremely good as the baddie but again, one could feel the Vidyut Jamwal hangover from Thuppakki. The rest of the actors including Karunakaran, Naren and Baghyaraj go through their motions and disappear. Technically Arvind Krishna’s stylish cinematography is a big asset for the movie and ‘Yeppa Chappa’ song too might work well with masses. But rest of the songs in the film are neither hummable and turn out to be speed breakers. Background score is just average. Overall, Kanithan tries hard to satisfy multiple agendas that telling an interesting story becomes secondary to everything else.
