James Whitcomb Riley was an American writer, poet, and best selling author. During his lifetime he was known as the Hoosier Poet, National Poet, and Children's Poet for his dialect works, readings at major civic events, and his children's poetry respectively. His poems tended to be humorous or sentimental, and of the approximately one thousand poems that Riley authored, over half are in dialect. His pen named varied depending on the type of poem he wrote. He wrote children's poems under the name "Uncle Sidney", his dialect writings as "Benjamin Johnson", and many of his early works under the name "Jay Whit". Riley's style was significantly influenced by Robert Burns, to whom he was compared by many critics.
