History Of Volkswagen

Volkswagen is a German auto maker well known among people across the world. Often abbreviated to VW, the company is based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is the original brand name under Volkswagen Group, which also houses Audi, Bentley Motors, Bugatti Automobiles, Automobili Lamborghini, SEAT, Skoda Auto and heavy goods vehicle manufacturer Scania. The word Volkswagen means ‘People’s Car’ in German. The tagline of the company reads as Das Auto meaning ‘The Car’. Volkswagen is mostly involved with manufacturing luxury models for the upper class of the society. In November 2009, Volkswagen and Porsche together surpassed Toyota and became the world’s largest car manufacturing group in terms of production.

Prior to 1930s, various efforts were made by auto makers in manufacturing simple cars that could be afforded even by the middle class, but none found any success. Most of the cars ended up costing more than an average man’s yearly wage, even after being designed in a simple manner to meet the basic transportation needs. However, Ferdinand Porsche set up an automotive design company called Porsche Buro in 1930. The company came up with an independent front suspension system, consisting of transversely mounted torsion bars, connected to two trailing arms on each side. This suspension was lighter than most others of that time.

In 1933, Hitler met Ferdinand to design a Volkswagen. He proposed an idea for a car that could seat 5 people, cruise up to 62 mph, return 33 mpg, and cost only 1000 Reich Marks ($ 250). This was an excellent opportunity for Ferdinand to push up the small car idea forward and help the citizens of Germany afford a car. Porsche designated this design as Type 60, which was later changed to V1. Hitler proposed for a convertible version, which was designated as V2. However, Porsche was not able to build the first two prototypes, which were only completed in 1935. The V1 design was upgraded and came to be known as VW3. This model had metal floors, swing axle rear transmissions, front independent suspensions and backbone floorpans. The engine chosen for the car was cheaper and reliable.

The next version VW30 was created and a total of 30 cars were produced. Eventually, many VW38s and VW39s were produced, which had front hinged doors, split windows in the rear, larger hoods and other differences. During World War II, an amphibious vehicle known as Type 166: the Schwimmwagen was produced. This vehicle was powered by a 25 hp engine and had a retractable ducted propeller in the rear, for use in water. Also, a simple military vehicle known as Type 82: Kübelwagen was also produced that came to be known as the Germany’s jeep. It had a flat-sided body that increased ground clearance. Some less than 16,000 Schwimmwagens and over 50,000 Kübelwagens were produced during the war.

In 1949, after Heinrich Nordhoff was appointed as the senior executive of Volkswagen, the company took a new turn, which proved to be fruitful. Production increased steadily and in late 1949, a new concept for a utility/ transport vehicle came up. 1950 saw the birth of VW transporter. Volkswagen cars were now being transported to other European countries like Denmark, Sweden, Luxemburg, Belgium and Switzerland. The company moved on to South Africa, where it started producing Beetles in the early 1950s. Volkswagen transporters did not gain as much popularity as Beetles. As a result, in the first 5 years of production, there were 4 times fewer buses built when compared to Beetles.

Volkswagen went global by building factories in other countries like England, South Africa, Brazil and Australia. Every year, the Beetle saw minor changes in itself. Turn signals were added and engines were improved. The Disney movie, Herbie further helped in promoting the Beetle. By late 1960s, Volkswagen was producing over one million Beetles each year, with the year 1969 being the most productive among all. The company developed a new car called the Super Beetle in 1971. The model had modern MacPherson struts in the front, instead of the older transverse beam arrangement. The models produced during 1972-74 were the only ones to have a real dashboard. In 1980, the convertible Beetle took off on the roads, after which Rabbit Pickup was introduced.

In 1981, Beetle broke records when the 20 millionth Beetle was produced in Puebla Mexico. Quantum, Golf, Rabbit, Jetta were produced in the following years. The 1990s witnessed the introduction of Fox, Vento, Sharan Van and the New Beetle in different countries across the world. The Golf Mk4 was adjudged as the third best European car of the year, in 1998, after Alfa Romeo 156 and Audi A6. Volkswagen’s market share grew in the UK, while the sales fell in the US. In the late 1990s, Volkswagen acquired three luxury brands under its group that were Lamborghini, Bentley and Audi. Since then, the Volkswagen group has been producing numerous models under various segments.

Volkswagen Serie 30   (1937)

Literally, the word "volkswagen" means "people's car." In Germany, the idea of a people's car wasn't exactly a new one. Before the 1930's, there had been many efforts to create simple cars that everyone could afford, but none met with profound success. Almost all cars before 1930, even if they were designed to be simple enough for the average person, ended up costing more than the average worker's yearly wage.

Meanwhile, the year is 1930, and Ferdinand Porsche had just set up an automotive design company, which became known as the Porsche Büro. The company patented a sophisticated independent front suspension system, which consisted of transversely mounted torsion bars connected to two trailing arms on each side. At the time, this was lighter than most other common types of suspension. In 1931, a German motorcycle company, Zündapp, asked Porsche if he could design a suitable car for them. Porsche came up with a streamlined 2 door sedan, which had lines similar to the Beetle. It was designated the Type 12. Zündapp wanted to put in a 1.2 liter radial engine from one of their motorcycles...this was the end of the line for this design, as it didn't make it any further.

Porsche then designed a car for NSU in 1933 that was known as the Type 32. This car looked even more similar to the upcoming KdF Wagen than the Type 12 did. This car looked similar to the Tatra V570, and shared many mechanical similarities. After World War II, the Volkswagen company paid Tatra for compensation, since Tatra believed its technology and design was pirated in development of the KdF Wagen. Eventaully, NSU dropped the Type 32 project.

Volkswagen Beetle  concept (1938)

Later in 1933, Adolf Hitler met with Ferdinand Porsche to discuss Hitler's idea of a volkswagen. Hitler proposed a people's car that could carry 5 people, cruise up to 62mph, return 33mpg, and cost only 1000 Reich Marks. This was an opportunity for Porsche to push his idea of a small car foward, as was it to help Hitler get a real people's car for the citizens of Germany.

Initially, Porsche designated this design the Type 60, but it was soon changed to the V1 (experimental 1). Hitler also proposed to have a convertible version produced: it was designated V2. Porsche was not able to make the deadline to finish the first two prototypes, as there was not enough time to physically design the cars and to built them. In any case, they were completed and driving by 1935. Soon, the V1 design was updated, and three cars were produced. This new design was the VW3. These cars were put through rigorous testing in 1936.

These cars looked very similar to the KdF Wagen, that was to appear later. Eventually, the VW3s had metal floors, swing axle rear transmissions, Porsche's front independed suspensions, and backbone floorpans. Several engines were tested, and eventually a flat four cylinder aircooled four stroke engine was chosen. Surprisingly, the engine that was chosen was cheaper and more reliable than some of the four cylinder two stroke engines that were tested. This 22.5 hp four cylinder "boxer" engine was roughly the same as the engines that would later be incorporated into Volkswagen Beetles that are still produced today.

After data was collected from the tests of the VW3s, the next version, the VW30 was created, and in all, 30 were produced. Due to Hitler's regime, control of the company and testing of the VW30 was given to a government organization called the DAF. Now, members of the SS were required to drive the VW30s to confirm that all the problems of the V3s were fixed. For the most part, these tests showed that most of the problems in earlier cars had been fixed.

In 1938, construction began on the KdF Wagen factory, and on the town that was going to be next to the factory. In 1939, several VW38s (pre-production) and VW39s (demonstration cars) were produced just to show that the factory did work, and to show what the final version of the car would look like. These cars were different from their predecessors in that they had front hinged doors (all the VW designs before had "suicide" doors), split windows in the rear, larger hoods, and many other minor differences. This edition of the car was the basis of the Beetle after the war was over.

When the V38s were introduced, Hitler abruptly changed the name of the car to KdF Wagen. KdF stood for "Kraft durch Freude" which meant "Strength through Joy." This upset Porsche, as he was not a member of the Nazi party, and he didn't support Hitler's use of propaganda when advertising the car.

Volkswagen Schwimmwagen  concept (1940)

The German government sold special stamps that could eventually be used to purchase a real KdF Wagen. In theory, as soon as 200 stamps were collected, they could be redeemed for a car. However, the KdF Wagen was not to be, and it never progressed beyond the prototype/demonstration stage. In later years, many people who collected these stamps took Volkswagen to court seeking compensation, since VW never made good on the KdF stamps. The KdF Wagen factory was busy pumping out Type 82s: Kübelwagens. The Kübelwagen was a simple looking military vehicle that basically used the same parts as the KdF Wagen, but had a flat-sided body, and increased ground clearance. It was essentially the Germany's "jeep" in WWII. During the war, the company also produced an amphibious vehicle, which was known as the Type 128, and later as the Type 166: the Schwimmwagen. This vehicle was powered by a 25hp engine, and had a retractable ducted propeller in the rear for water use. In the water, the Schwimmwagen could achieve up to 5mph, and surprisingly steered in the water with its front tires. There were over 50,000 Type 82s produced, and less than 16,000 Schwimmwagens produced during the war. There were several military off-shoots of the KdF Wagen produced during the war:

Kommandeurwagen: KdF Wagen with ragtop sunroof, four-wheel drive, increased ground clearance

Papler: The Papler company built several four door versions of the KdF Wagen for use in parades and for police

Porsche even experimented with very unusual powerplants, such as a wood-gas engine, compressed CO2 engines (very short range), and more.

Volkswagen Kubelwagen Type 82 concept (1940)

The KdF Wagen factory was a prime target for allied forces during the war, and before long, it was partially destroyed. After the war was over, the British Army took over the factory. The British were interested in the factory, because they needed light transportation: what else could they do? The factory was brought back up (it was still damaged, however) with leadership provided by Major Ivan Hirst of the British Army, and by the end of 1945, had produced more than 2000 cars. Most of them were produced from spare parts that were left in the factory. Within a year, the factory had produced over 10,000 cars, all thanks to assistance from the British government. Sometime after 1945, the company was named Volkswagen by the British, who also renamed the town at the factory "Wolfsburg", which was the name of a local castle. The British sought to give control of the company to able hands: the Ford company turned the offer down because it thought it would be a waste of money, the French government refused; nobody seemed to want the company. In 1949, the British government was finally able to relinquish control of the company to the German government. Heinrich Nordhoff was appointed as the senior executive of Volkswagen, a move which proved to be a very good one.

After 1949, production at Volkswagen steadily increased. Nordhoff's experience and knowledge proved invaluable for the company. Late in 1949, an idea for a utility/transport vehicle was developed, and by 1950, the VW transporter was born.

Volkswagens were being exported to neighboring European countries such as Denmark, Sweeden, Luxemburg, Belgium, and Switzerland. As early as 1950, Volkswagen began producing Beetles in South Africa (They were now known as Beetles) as well. Volkswagen comissioned an old German coach building company, Karmann, to build their Beetle convertibles. Every single convertible Volkswagen Beetle was completed by Karmann: hence the special badges on VW convertibles. In 1952, a Volkswagen dealership was opened in England: which was the first there. A few Volkswagens were imported into the United States in 1949 by Ben Pon, but they didn't immediatley gain popularity. Very few were sold in their first year in the US.

The Hoffmann company of New York, which imported Beetles in the early 1950s, eventually abandonded Volkswagen, and imported Porsches instead. Volkswagen did not sell many cars in the United States until later in the mid-1950s.

Volkswagen Beetle  concept (1953)

In 1951, Volkswagen began to export a deluxe version of the beetle. There was already a "standard" Beetle, which was only available in a dull gray color. These standard Beetles were spartan: they lacked synchromesh transmissions, exterior and interior chrome, and other special extra options that one might expect to have as standard in cars today. There were also regular export cars, that were available in several colors. The export cars also had chrome and more options as standard, such as a radio. The American export cars had even more chrome than regular export cars, and were generally the most elaborate with options and features. The American deluxe Beetles got hydraulic brakes in 1952, and lost their semaphores (flag-like turn signals) in 1955.

Volkswagen transporters were not as popular as Beetles, and in the first 5 years of production, there were 4 times fewer Buses built as Beetles. The Buses (and all other transporters) produced before 1955 had characteristically large engine access doors. Today, they are largely known as "barndoor" buses. Some people think that barndoor is supposed to be a reference to the side doors, but it is a misconception. These early barndoor transporters are very rare today.

Still in the 1950s, Volkswagen had already acted on its global goals by building factories in several countries. A factory began building Beetles in England, the plant in South Africa was building them, and a plant in Brazil provided a South American connection. Later, in 1960, a plant in Australia opened up, but never ended up being as successful as the other factories.

Volkswagen Beetle convertible concept (1953)

Beetles built before 1953 (and some during that year) looked almost identical to the KdF Wagen designed before WWII. Midway in 1953, Volkswagen changed the rear split windows of the Beetles, and added a slightly larger oval window. This oval window was said to increase visibility out of the rear of the car up to 33%. By 1955, Volkswagen came out with a new model called the Karmann Ghia. It used many parts from the Beetle to keep production cheaper, and less complex. The Karmann Ghia was a joint venture by companies Karmann (builds VW Beetle cabriolets) and Ghia.

Volkswagen production kept increasing through the late 1950s. In 1958, the larger rear window that most people see in Beetles today (Ovals and Splits are much more rare than the larger window Beetles) was adopted. In each year, minor changes were made to the Beetle, and the other cars in Volkswagen's lineup, but nothing very drastic. Different turn signals were added, slightly improved engines, and other small things were common in the year to year changes. Volkswagen also had a very successful advertising campaign in the 1960s which helped contribute to its success in the United States. The Disney movie, Herbie, also helped promote the Beetle. The Herbie movies portrayed the Beetle as a "love bug." Later in the 1960s, Volkswagen produced over one million Beetles each year. 1969 was the most productive year for Volkswagen.

Volkswagen Sun Valley  concept (1960)

After the Beetle's boom years in the late 1960s, its sales began to decline. In 1967, the transporter underwent major design changes, and in 1969 on US Export Beetles, VW added CV joints in the rear of the car in an effort to improve high speed stability on American highways. The traditional swingaxle system worked Ok, but at high speeds tended to lose stability.

Volkswagen K 70  concept (1970)

In 1971, Volkswagen developed a *new* car called the Super Beetle. The Super Beetle had modern MacPherson struts in the front instead of the older transverse beam arrangement it had since the 1930s: this new suspension allowed the trunk to be deeper, thus creating more luggage space in the front trunk. The Super Beetles of '71 had the same windshields as the standard Beetles did, but from '72-'74, a wrap around curved windshield was implemented. These were the only Beetles to have anything in the way of a real dashboard. Super Beetles were smoother cruisers on the highway, but did not make good Baja Beetle platforms. Ever increasing US government regulations on safety and emissions controls pushed the Beetle to its limits. The Beetle could not be adapted to keep up with the other cars in the industry. Volkswagen stopped production of the Beetle sedan in 1977, and stopped production of the cabriolet in 1979.

1980 - Jan. 10th, Karmann finished producing the convertible Beetle. The last 4,572 conv. Beetles were sold in the US. Jetta, Vanagon and Rabbit Pickup were introduced.

1981 - 20 millionth Beetle was produced in Puebla Mexico.

1982 - Quantum was introduced to the US. Last year of production of the air cooled Volkswagen in Germany.

Audi vehicle sales in China up 20% in June

Reuters (Frankfurt) - Volkswagen's premium carmaker Audi said it sold 20.4 percent more cars in China in June than a year ago.
That rate of growth represents a slowdown from the 44.2 percent rise seen in May, however.
For the first six months of 2012, Audi sold 193,871 cars in China, a rise of 37.8 percent.
Audi said that made it the most popular premium brand in China, and added it wished to continue to grow at double-digit rate in 2012.

Volkswagen to take full control of Porsche

Volkswagen Group's decision to take full control of Porsche Automobil Holding SE's carmaking business is seen as positive by analysts.

VW said it has agreed to buy the remaining 50.1 percent of Porsche SE's automotive business that it doesn't already own for 4.46 billion euros ($5.54 billion), ending a seven-year takeover saga that divided two of Germany's most powerful families.

The agreement means Volkswagen can now fully fold the Porsche automaking business into its stable of brands, which range from Audi and Bentley sedans to Skoda and Seat volume models and Ducati motorbikes.

It leaves Porsche SE, which is controlled by the Piech-Porsche family, still owning 50.7 percent of VW's common stock.

"To have the Porsche clan as owners and the anchor shareholder is good for Volkswagen and for Germany," said Christoph Stuermer, an IHS Automotive analyst in Frankfurt. "This has changed the cultural heart of the company. Volkswagen has become substantially stronger and long-term oriented."

'Good deal'

Erich Hauser, a Credit Suisse analyst in London, said: "It's very positive for VW as they get 50 percent of an asset they value at $32.32 billion euros on their own books for $5.54 billion. If I was a Porsche shareholder, I'd feel slightly short-changed though."

Morgan Stanley analyst Stuart Pearson said VW is getting a good deal. He predicted in a note to investors that its completion would lift VW earnings by 6 percent next year. "Porsche is the world's best premium car story," he said.

With sales volumes running close to 20 percent above their previous record, Porsche's main challenge is "securing sufficient production capacity," and integration with VW may help, Pearson said. VW already plans to begin assembling some Porsche models in its own plants.

At a press conference at its Wolfsburg, Germany, headquarters on Thursday, VW said it expected the integration of Porsche to be fully ratified by Aug. 1.

"We can now cooperate even more closely and jointly leverage new growth opportunities in the high-margin premium segment," VW CEO Martin Winterkorn said in a statement. "Combining their operating business will make Volkswagen and Porsche even stronger--both financially and strategically--going forward."

$8.7 billion cash drain

Porsche's earnings contribution for this year will be mainly offset by the purchase price, VW said. By revaluing its existing shares in Porsche, VW expects to book a non-cash gain of more than $11.18 billion and predicts a liquidity drain on its own automaking division of about $8.7 billion.

Volkswagen is paying the purchase price, plus transferring one share to Porsche, in a move that allows the carmaker to classify the merger as a restructuring rather than a takeover.

Doing so means VW avoids a tax bill on the purchase of about $1.24 billion. The agreement with tax authorities has been criticized by some German politicians.

The cash deal is based on an equity value of $4.82 billion and also includes what the Porsche holding company would have received in dividend payments and half of the forecast synergies from the combination.

"I am not surprised by the deal as such, only by the timing," said Albrecht Denninghoff, a Frankfurt-based analyst at Silvia Quandt Research. "Both parties have wanted the integration for a long time."

Piech-Porsche family split

Porsche's attempt, starting in 2005, to take over Volkswagen, which makes more cars in a week than the sports-car maker does in a year, split the Porsche-Piech family that controls Porsche.

Ferdinand Piech, VW's chairman, crossed his cousin Wolfgang Porsche to thwart the plan, which fell apart after Porsche's SE's debt rose to $13.67 billion in the midst of the financial crisis.

VW helped Porsche SE in its debt crisis by buying nearly 50 percent of Porsche's carmaking business for $4.85 billion at the end of 2009.

Piech, 75, the former VW CEO, was elected to a third term as VW chairman in April and has since solidified control of Volkswagen. His wife, Ursula, took a seat on the company's supervisory board earlier this year.

Porsche SE said it will repay remaining bank liabilities of $2.49 billion in full from the $5.54 billion that it will receive. "The major portion of the liquidity remaining is intended to be used for strategic equity investments, focusing along the automotive value chain," it said.

Fiat has given us a preview of a crossover version of the 500 minicar.

The crossover will be called the 500X. It goes on sale in Europe in early 2014 and shortly thereafter here in the U.S.

Jeep is also working up a crossover based on the same platform as the 500X. It is code-named B-SUV and goes into production in early 2014.

Ford says it expects the C-Max hybrid wagon to be rated at 47 mpg in city driving and 44 mpg on the highway, putting it ahead of the rival Toyota Prius V.

The C-Max shares its platform with the Focus but uses a taller, wagon body style. It has seating for five passengers and stickers for just less than $26,000.

Ford is also preparing a plug-in hybrid version of the C-Max. It goes on sale this fall.

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai July 3) - Shanghai Volkswagen manufactured its eight millionth sedan, a blue colored New Lavida, last week, chinanews.com reported today. The news marks a new milestone for the joint venture.

Shanghai VW is one of China's earliest automobile joint ventures, having been established in March of 1985. The JV, which is equally owned by SAIC Group and German manufacturer VW AG, sells models covering all segments of the passenger automobile industry. The JV manufactured its seven millionth sedan in September of last year, meaning it only took nine months for it to manufacture one million sedans.

Shanghai VW currently has four automobile factories, an engine factory and a technology research and development center spread across its two key bases in Shanghai's Anting District and Jiangsu's capital of Nanjing. The JV is also in the process of constructing new factories in Ningbo, Zhejiang and Yizheng, Jiangsu. Furthermore, the JV has previously stated its intent to expand into the far western region of Xinjiang.

FAW-VW takes measures to prevent its dealerships from overcharging Chinese customers

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai July 1)- An internal document recently forwarded from FAW Volkswagen to its dealerships has gained the attention of many in the industry. In the document, FAW-VW explicitly prohibits dealerships from raising fixed prices on its models. Several commentators, including the Nanfang Daily, which reported on the story earlier this week, speculate that the document is the joint venture's way of responding to public allegations of price control by its dealerships.

According to the document, FAW-VW dealerships must sell any VW vehicles at the manufacturer's set price, and are banned from forcing consumers to purchase optional features or services they do not wish to buy. The documents specifically mentioned the CC and Golf, both popular models in the country. Any dealerships found to disobey the policy would be forced to compensate affected customers twice the amount overcharged within three working days. In certain instances, FAW-VW will go as far as suspending the dealership's commission for the remainder of the quarter. Dealerships may also see their ranking in the FAW-VW sales network negatively affected.

Many believe that FAW-VW announced the new policy in order to quell government suspicions that dealerships were illegally raising the prices of popular models. Price differences between several models among the JV's dealers in the north and south of the country have attracted a great deal of attention. Several models, including the new Magotan, CC and Golf, are considerably more expensive in FAW-VW dealers the north of China than those in the south. Consumers and industry analysts both have applauded the JV's decision to prevent illegal price raising in a tough market where making sales is considerably difficult.

FAW-VW manufactures 6m vehicles in China

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai July 1)- FAW Volkswagen's six millionth automobile rolled off the production lines at the joint venture's factory in Jilin's capital of Changchun on Thursday, Changchun Evening News reported earlier this week. FAW-VW marked the event by inviting over 200 people, including its management, stockholders and various press organizations.
The six millionth car, an Audi A4L (pictured above), came off the assembly lines not long after a VW Sagitar was manufactured at FAW-VW's Chengdu, Sichuan passenger car factory. The event was streamed live between the JV's Changchun and Chengdu factories. Board Chairman and President An Tiecheng (pictured below) stated that the event represents a new beginning for the JV. He believes that from this point on, the JV has the confidence to perfect the quality of its products and marketing in China.

From its first car built on Chinese soil, FAW-VW took a full 12 years to produce one million vehicles. The JV has made spectacular gains since then. Only a mere ten months ago it manufactured its five millionth automobile. The JV's total annual production capacity is now well over one million vehicles.

FAW-VW may begin making new generation VW Golf in China by August 2013

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai June 27)- FAW-Volkswagen may begin manufacturing the new seventh generation Golf as early as August of next year, the Beijing Youth Daily reported today. The compact will be manufactured at the joint venture's factory in Foshan, Guangdong.

Only four years after its predecessor was introduced, the seventh generation Golf was announced. While it is unlike VW to release a new model so quickly, intense competition in the market seems to be forcing the manufacturer to adapt quickly. The new Golf is expected to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year. Although it has yet to make its debut, several unofficial concept renderings (pictured) have been made.

In a departure from tradition, the new Golf will not be built on the PQ35 platform, but instead on the MQB platform, which will also be used for the next generation Tiguan. The new Golf will be larger and more spacious than the current version. It will come with a variety of turbocharged engines available, including a 300 bhp 2.0 L gasoline engine and a 1.2 L diesel engine. Plug-in hybrid and BlueMotion pure electric versions are also in the making.

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai)- Shanghai General Motors' sales exceeded those of sister company Shanghai Volkswagen's for the first time in 2005, making it China's top selling joint venture for the year. Its sales continued to grow in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, it experienced a slight sales decrease, falling behind Shanghai VW and FAW-VW in the overall rankings. However, by 2010 it had recovered its number one place, which it has held ever since.

Last year Shanghai VW sold a total of 1.23 million vehicles. Its sales in the first five months of this year totaled 555,300 units. The joint venture's growth rates have far exceeded those of its closest rivals Shanghai VW and FAW-VW. A brief summary of the JV's sales performance over the last decade follows below.

Shanghai GM was established in 1997, 12 years after Shanghai VW and six years after FAW-VW. From 2002 to 2004, the joint venture started making considerable gains on the two rivals. December of 2002 marked the Chinese debut of the Buick Regal, while April of the next year saw the introduction of the Kaiyue Excelle. The JV's sales grew a full 81.6 percent in 2003. Sales growth petered off the next year, increasing 'only' 13.1 percent, still faster than Shanghai VW and FAW-VW.

Then in 2005, Shanghai GM brought the Chevrolet brand to the country. That same year, it also began domestic production of the Cadillac CTS, setting the foundation for the three brand strategy it employs today. In the following years, Shanghai GM brought over the Buick Lacrosse and Park Avenue. In 2006, the JV began importing Saab vehicles as well.
Shanghai GM sold 32,470 vehicles in 2005, surpassing rivals Shanghai VW and FAW-VW, which sold 287,100 and 272,000 vehicles, respectively.

However, Shanghai GM's lack of diversity in its lineup restricted its potential growth. Aside from the Chevy Aveo and Buick Kaiyue Excelle, none of the JV's models made it into the top three lists for individual segment sales. In fact, the joint venture's sales fell 8.3 percent in 2008, finishing behind FAW-VW and Shanghai VW.

In response, the joint venture introduced a plethora of new models over the next two years, including the Chevrolet Cruze and New Sail, as well as updated versions of the Buick Regal and LaCrosse. Its sales grew 58.7 percent in 2009 and 42.1 percent the following year, when it finally broke the one million sales barrier.

Last year, when growth in the Chinese automobile market slowed down to 8.7 percent, Shanghai GM still managed to sustain double digit growth. The JV sold a total of 1.23 million vehicles during the year, 18.5 percent more than the 1.03 million it sold in 2010.

As for this year, Shanghai GM's sales in the first five months of the year totaled 555,300 units, more than any of its competitors. Total sales during the five month period grew under ten percent from last year. However, Shanghai GM has been losing ground in the subcompact segment to rivals Shanghai VW and FAW-VW, which both managed to outsell the JV in April. The JV's sales made a slight rebound in March, with a total of 110,500 vehicles sold, slightly above Shanghai VW's 100,300 sales but still less than FAW-VW's 120,500 sales. Several of its models are still performing strongly, with the Kaiyue Excelle and New Sail still leading their respective segments.

VW reshuffle reflects China market's power

China Daily - In a move that shows China's increasing importance in Volkswagen's global strategy, the auto giant recently announced it will establish a new management board for its operations in the country.

According to the announcement, Jochem Heizmann, former board member responsible for commercial vehicles, will now lead the company's China operations.
The automaker said in a statement that the reorganization "underpins the significance of the largest market in the world".

The news release added that the move is part of an extensive management realignment at Europe's largest carmaker announced on June 2, which includes a new board member for its commercial vehicle business and replacement of three Audi board members.
The company also replaced the head of its luxury units Bentley and Bugatti and the chiefs of its commercial vehicle brands MAN and Scania.

Most of the appointments will take effect on Sept 1.
Volkswagen's CEO Martin Winterkorn said the reorganization is an "important building block for implementing Strategy 2018".

The strategy formulated in 2008 called for the company to become the world's leading automaker - economically and environmentally - by the end of the following decade.
Beijing-based independent auto analyst Zhong Shi said the management reshuffle reflects Volkswagen's desire to drive its growth in every business sector including China, one of its most important markets.

"Selling more than 2 million vehicles in a single market is unusual," Zhong said, "The prerequisite for Volkswagen to be the leader globally is that it must do an excellent job in China, better than it does now."

Last year Volkswagen sold nearly 2.3 million vehicles in China, more than one-fourth of its global deliveries, making the country its largest market for three consecutive years.

A company plan released last September said its two joint ventures in China will invest 14 billion euros ($17.6 billion) in capacity expansion and new models from 2012 to 2016.

Volkswagen Group China's current president and CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann, an expert on electric vehicles who took the position in September 2010, will leave his post. Winterkorn said he's seeking a new role at Volkswagen for Neumann, according to Bloomberg news service.
Media reports speculated that the change was partly due to recent publicity over problems with Volkswagen's China-made direct shift gearbox (DSG).
The company declined to comment on those reports.

The carmaker recently extended the warranty in its DSG transmission to 10 years or 160,000 kilometers in China to restore consumer confidence after many customers complained about abnormal noise, excessive shift shock and overheating.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine arranged talks with Volkswagen representatives two times but the company did not launch a recall, stating the issue is related to driving comfort but not safety.

Instead it began to offer a free service in March to update software, which proved to have controversial effects - some car owners said it didn't fix the previous problems but weakened power performance and increased fuel consumption.

The national quality supervision administration is still investigating the issue.

The new Elantra GT represents the evolution of Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture design language and is our version of the Hyundai i30 that is sold in Europe. The Elantra GT is powered by a 148 horsepower 1.8L four-cylinder that is mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. It gets up to 39 mpg on the highway. It's hard to fathom, but it's been more than a decade since the peak of the sport-compact craze saw modified Honda Civics cluttering the streets. Enthusiasts salivated over a Type R that wasn't (and still isn't) available on our shores, instead having to settle for the Si. Fast-forward to today and the debut of the ninth-generation Civic for the 2012 model year brings a new Si.

A 2.4-liter engine replaces the previous 2.0-liter for 201 hp and a healthy torque jump of 31 lb-ft to 170 lb-ft, but this comes at the expense of 1,000 rpm at the top end, for a 7,000-rpm redline. A six-speed manual and a limited-slip differential remain on the standard menu.

With our test car shod in Michelin Pilot Exalto summer tires, the Si puts the power down well out of corners. It still understeers when pressed, but even so, the Civic is capable of carrying plenty of speed through sweepers, with noticeable lean from a suspension that strikes a pleasing balance between performance and daily comfort. Throw in the smooth engine, slick gearbox, well-tuned clutch and brakes that held up well, and all of our testers were more than willing to take the Si out for a few more laps.

No sport-compact discussion is complete without the Volkswagen GTI, however. The definitive hot hatchback is still relevant a couple of years removed from its last major update, with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. That extra punch helped the GTI edge the Si in the speed tests. To 60 mph, the Honda needed 7.21 seconds, the Volkswagen just 7.05 seconds. The quarter-mile saw the Civic stop the timer at 15.65 seconds compared with the GTI's 15.34-second run.

Those victories were soon forgotten when we hit the road course. After a half session, the GTI's brake pedal went to the floor in the turn-one transition onto the infield. The cooked brakes required nearly 143 feet to stop from 60 mph, while the Civic got the job done in 129.4 feet. Testers also weren't fond of the GTI shifter's long throws and rubbery feel compared with the Si's, nor the lightly weighted steering of the German car.

What's to like about the GTI? As mentioned, the potent engine and balanced handling are its strongest assets. Like the Civic, it tends to push in corners, but the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx rubber provides a good amount of grip.

The takeaway? The old sport-compact guard is alive and well with both the Civic Si and the GTI. And both are available in more practical, four-door body styles. But if you go with a Volkswagen, upgrade the brake fluid and pads immediately if you plan any track outings.

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai June 12) - FAW Volkswagen has officially begun work on its new automobile 'proving ground' test site in Changchun, Jilin, Beijing Business Today reported today. The state-of-the-art site will reportedly be the largest of its kind in the country. In an official statement, FAW Group Board Chairman Xu Jianyi said that the site is the result of close cooperation between his company and Volkswagen Group. It will help increase the joint venture's product development and go a long way in improving the local economy, Mr. Xu added.

The site is located in Nong'an County, approximately 70 km from the center of Changchun. A total of 140,000 sq. m. has been set aside for the site, with its facilities taking up 16,000 sq. m. The site will possess 670,000 sq. m. of test track, which will include high-speed and other tracks. It is scheduled to be fully operational by 2014. According to internal sources, the site represents an important step forward for FAW-VW's research and development ability.

VW China Executive Vice President Klaus Dierkes stated that the site is being built in adherence with the strictest of standards laid out by the German manufacturer. Upon completion, it will be China's largest and most technologically advanced testing center, and will play a key role in developing vehicles aimed specifically at Chinese consumers. The site will also help solidify VW's position as one of the leading manufacturers in the Chinese and Asia-Pacific automobile industries.

The diesel-powered 2013 Volkswagen Beetle will carry a sticker price of $24,065 including $770 in destination charges when it arrives in dealerships in August. It will be the first diesel Bug to hit the United States since 2006.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged oil burner will join the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine and the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine in the lineup. Like the Golf TDI hatchback, the Beetle will have an output of 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. VW says fuel economy will come in at 32 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

All three trims will come with VW's standard six-speed manual transmission with the option of the dual-clutch automatic. The base Beetles include power windows, Bluetooth, steering-wheel-mounted controls, keyless entry and a media-device interface.

Shanghai VW's Chinese sales exceed 100000 units in May

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai June 7) - Shanghai Volkswagen's retail sales last month totaled 100,003 units, Gasgoo.com (Chinese) reported today. The sales figure represents year-on-year growth of 13.6 percent for the joint venture.

Volkswagen brand models accounted for 81,118 sales. The near four-year-old Lavida (pictured above) remained the JV's best selling model, with a total of 18,808 units sold last month. The New Passat (pictured below) managed to bring in 15,362 orders, contributing greatly to the Passat family's monthly sales of 17,043 units. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 101,810 Passats have been sold in the country. Combined sales of the New Polo and New Cross Polo totaled 14,282 units. 13,008 Tiguans were sold, 37 percent more than last May, while sales of the new Touran were just above 2,300 units.

The remaining 18,885 sales were of Skoda vehicles. The flagship Octavia once again led the brand's sales last month, with a total of 12,036 units sold. Monthly sales of the Fabia and the Superb totaled 3,358 and 3,491 units, respectively.
