Title: 8 Reasons Why Teeth May Become Discolored And What To Do To Prevent It
Post by: LoShiNi on September 27, 2017, 09:57:54 AM
Everybody wants their smile to look stunning, but proper dental hygiene is not always enough to keep your teeth perfectly white. And some factors that cause tooth discoloration are not so obvious at first. But do not try to whiten them immediately. At first, find out what harm can come from very popular methods of teeth whitening at home:

And here’s a list of common causes of tooth discoloration:

1. Foods and drinks

Some foods and drinks contain substances that either wear down your enamel or stain it. The most common culprits include:

- black tea and coffee;

- cola and other sodas;

- red and white wines;

- candies;

- some sauces and condiments, e.g. ketchup, tomato sauce, soy sauce, sweet chili, and curry;

- brightly colored fruit juices, especially store-bought;

- some fruits and vegetables, including blueberries, pomegranates, apples, beets, and potatoes (which, of course, doesn’t mean you should stop eating them)

2. Smoking or chewing tobacco

3. Poor oral hygiene

Not brushing and flossing your teeth properly and frequently enough, as well as overusing antiseptic mouthwash can make teeth lose their white color.

4. Certain conditions and medications

Certain conditions can affect your enamel and dentin (bony tissue beneath the enamel). Treatments and medications that can lead to tooth discoloration include:

- radiation and chemotherapy;

- certain antibiotics (if given to children younger than 8 years);

- some antihistamines;

- antipsychotic medication;

- medications used to treat blood pressure.

5. Getting older

As you get older, the enamel of your teeth becomes thinner, and dentin (which is naturally yellow) becomes more visible.

6. Genes

Some people’s enamel is naturally whiter and stronger.

7. Fluoride

Too much fluoride in your environment (e.g. in water) or overusing dental care products containing fluoride and fluoride supplements can make your teeth less white.

8. Dry mouth

Decreased production of saliva can also contribute to tooth discoloration because saliva provides natural protection for your enamel.

If your teeth have changed their color and you’re concerned, make an appointment with your dentist.
