Did You Know That 2017 Has an Extra Second?
Did you realise that New Year's came a little late this time? It's not just you, the whole world experienced a delayed New Year and the fireworks came a second later.
This is because 2017 has an extra second to it. The earth's rate of rotation slows down every now and then, resulting in the need to add an extra second to the atomic clocks. The last leap second occured in June 30, 2015.
You might think that missing out on a second is no big deal. Actually, a miscalculation in time, even in microseconds, can result in a 300m error in positioning. GPS is affected by time, meaning that ships may clash into other ships' routes if the leap second was not added.
